Patent number: 5360967Abstract: An apparatus for identifying equipment, including the maintenance of usage histories for the equipment and recommending whether the equipment is to be used in a prospective application based on prospective application and usage history. A portable encapsulated passive circuit capable of transmitting an identification code is affixed to a piece of equipment. The circuit is activated by a portable reader which receives and decodes the identification code and transmits it to a central computer. The central computer verifies the reader and the existence of the equipment in a database and retrieves the usage history for the equipment. Based on the usage history, the prospective application and guidelines for usage of equipment, the computer determines the advisability of using the equipment in the prospective application and transmits the recommendation back to the portable reader.Type: GrantFiled: August 25, 1993Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Inventors: Gregg S. Perkin, Lawrence A. Denny

Patent number: 4792000Abstract: A drilling tool for use in drilling operations for providing shock absorption capability and lateral support to the rotary drill string. The telescoping axial load shock absorber is positioned immediately adjacent at least one lateral support provided by a reamer or stabilizer. The stabilizer preferably employs a removable fixed blade secured to the tool by an undercut groove. The roller cutter for a reamer is also mounted in a preferred unique manner with the mounting blocks secured in a recess having an undercut retainer portion in the event of bolting failure. The mounting's brackets may be formed integral of the tool body or attached by welding or the like. A preferred form of mounting a blade on a stabilizer tool is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1987Date of Patent: December 20, 1988Assignee: Oil Patch Group, Inc.Inventors: Gregg S. Perkin, Duane D. Papke

Patent number: 4771811Abstract: A substantially homogeneous heavy wall drill pipe and its method of manufacture are disclosed. A cylindrical ingot is placed in a multi-hammer forging press to form the ingot into a drill pipe bar having a central protector portion and upper and lower connector sections each of larger diameter than cylindrical body sections of the drill pipe. Thereafter, the bar is straightened and upper and lower end connectors are machined. Threaded end portions are machined on the connectors and a bore is drilled through the drill pipe bar.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 1987Date of Patent: September 20, 1988Assignee: Lor, Inc.Inventors: Alonzo L. DeCell, Gregg S. Perkin, Peter Patarini

Patent number: 4565252Abstract: A borehole operating tool such as an underreamer or milling tool for performing borehole expanding or cutting operations in an oil well borehole, the tool including an elongated cylindrical housing having a main bore and side openings in which expandable arms are mounted for pivotal movement between closed and opened positions by a pivot pin; a piston element is mounted within the main bore of the housing for moving to an actuated position holding the expandable arms in an outer, expanded position; and a rotary fluid housing is mounted within each expandable arm about the hinge pin and includes a body nozzle for receiving fluid from the body and an expandable arm nozzle for directing fluid into a bore which extends through the expandable arm to thereby provide circulating fluid outwardly of the expandable arm in order to keep the operating outer end area of the expandable arm from becoming clogged.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1984Date of Patent: January 21, 1986Assignee: LOR, Inc.Inventors: Thomas R. Campbell, William L. Cunningham, Gregg S. Perkin

Patent number: 4282941Abstract: A subsurface borehole underreamer comprises a tubular body which is adapted at its upper end for coaxial connection to a rotary drill string. A plurality of cutter support arms have upper and lower ends. The upper ends of the arms are pivoted to the body for motion of the lower ends thereof between retracted positions, in which the lower ends are disposed essentially within the diameter of the body, and open positions, in which the arm lower ends are disposed outwardly of the body. Cutters are mounted to the lower end of each arm and are configured to extend essentially to the center of the body when the arm is in its retracted position. An actuator in the body is selectively operable for moving the arms from their retracted to their open positions.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 1979Date of Patent: August 11, 1981Assignee: Smith International Inc.Inventor: Gregg S. Patent number: 4023630Abstract: A well jar has telescoping inner and outer elements having a torque transmitting connection therebetween. An intermediate member is rotatably mounted relative to the telescoping elements and is affixed in a longitudinal direction to one of the telescoping elements. A releasable latch is connected between the intermediate member and one of the telescoping elements. The intermediate member is rotatable relative to the telescoping elements upon a predetermined minimum longitudinal force applied between the telescoping elements. The rotation causes a release of the latch and movement of the telescoping elements to an impact of coacting impact faces on the telescoping elements. An improvement involves a time delay section connected between the intermediate member and at least one of the telescoping elements for restraining such relative rotation for a preselected time interval of application of at least such minimum longitudinal force.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 1976Date of Patent: May 17, 1977Assignee: Smith International, Inc.Inventors: Gregg S. Perkin, Glen Robinson, Theodore G. Thometz
