Abstract: Communication system for transmitting data packets via a plurality of virtual wireless communication links established between a base station and a plurality of operable mobile stations, the communication links having a variable transmission capacity and wherein messages for a requirement-oriented data transmission are transmitted on a plurality of communication links or channels within three types of control data packets. Said control data packets contain messages grouped according to their importance, allowing an efficient error treatment. The partitioning of messages into groups further allows an increase of the flexibility and efficiency of a data transmission, since only necessary control information is transmitted a direct decoding of received control data packets becomes possible without a detour via a higher level of a used communication model.

Abstract: Method and system for performing an optimised hand over between a first base station BS1 and a second base station BS2, wherein a mobile terminal MT requests a hand over. During hand over the loss of data has to be avoided and a fast retransmission should be provided. Further the hand over is preferably under the control of the mobile terminal MT initialising the hand over. The invention therefore provides a method and a system where an information stream is divided into segments and where each segment is numbered. The numbered segments are transmitted via the first communication path P1 and via the first base station (BS1) to the mobile terminal MT and at the same time they are stored on the second communication path P2 to the second base station (BS2), which is the one where the hand over is requested to. After the execution of the hand over one numbered segment identified by the exact number is requested via the second communication path P2.

Abstract: A method, and associated apparatus, formats asynchronous data, such as ATM data traffic, and synchronous data, such as synchronous voice traffic, pursuant to a common format. Once formatted pursuant to the common format, data generated during operation of two different types of communication systems can be communicated over a common radio link. A single frequency band can be used to communicate communication signals generated during operation of at least two separate communication systems.
