  • Patent number: 6644268
Abstract: In a method for the injection of Diesel fuel into a combustion chamber of a Diesel engine by way of a fuel injection valve with a plurality of pilot and main fuel injection ports, the fuel is injected during partial load operation only by way of the pilot injection ports such that a homogeneous mixture is formed and, under full load operation, fuel is additionally injected—after a pause—through the main fuel injection ports in such a way that a fuel jet bundle is formed in combination with the fuel jets formed by the pilot ports which is extends over the whole periphery of the combustion chamber. The fuel injection valve has the main fuel ports arranged in a piezo-actuated tappet in series in the direction of the opening movement of the tappet behind the associated pilot ports. With the piezo drive the opening stroke of the tappet can be controlled so as to provide fuel injection pauses between the pilot fuel injection and the main fuel injection.

  • Patent number: 6279538
Abstract: A method for evaluating an ion current signal of a self-igniting internal combustion engine, with the ignition shift being derived from the time shift of the local maximum in the curve of the ion current signal relative to an injection point in time. Similarly, continuous injection in a cylinder can be detected when the ion current signal is integrated and evaluated in terms of area and/or when the position and/or height of the maximum of the ion current signal are evaluated. Carbon formation can be detected by an evaluation of the time curve of the ion current signal following an injection. For example, the parameters of the main injection can be controlled as a function of an evaluation of the measured ion current following a preinjection. When a continuous injection is detected, injection can be suppressed at least in those cylinders in which continuous injection was detected.

  • Patent number: 6223714
Abstract: Switching off a fuel pump of a fuel supply system for the internal combustion engine with the aid of a signal from a retardation sensor of the airbag in the event of a crash in which the motor vehicle is involved is known. To further enhance the safety of motor-vehicle occupants, a method is proposed for an internal combustion engine which has at least one fuel injection valve, a fuel supply system for the at least one fuel injection valve, and a sensor for detecting a crash. After the crash has been detected by means of the sensor, the fuel injection valve is brought into an open position, with the result that fuel is discharged from the fuel supply system of the fuel injection valve into a combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The method according to the invention is provided for internal combustion engines with at least one fuel injection valve.

  • Patent number: 6082100
Abstract: A method for operating a multicylinder internal combustion engine with at least one adsorber catalytic converter in the exhaust line of the internal combustion engine includes operating the adsorber catalytic converter with periodically alternating adsorption and desorption operation. The exhaust leaving the adsorber catalytic converter in desorption operation is recycled and/or an oxidation catalytic converter is provided upstream of the adsorber catalytic converter. Exhaust recycling takes place occurs selectively in only one set of the cylinders of the internal combustion engine and this set of cylinders is operated in a state of incomplete combustion during desorption operation. Rich afterburning may be performed during desorption operation of the adsorber catalytic converter in the oxidation catalytic converter connected upstream and the oxidation catalytic converter is operated at an increased temperature during short regeneration phases to remove soot.

  • Patent number: 5931390
Abstract: In a valve for the dosed discharge of fluids particularly a fuel injection valve for fuel injection systems of internal combustion engines, the valve includes in an valve housing at the front end of an injector housing a valve structure at a fluid discharge end of the valve housing and a stack of piezo elements disposed in the opposite end of the injector housing and a high pressure fluid passages leads to the fluid discharge end which is isolated from the area in which the stack of piezo elements is disposed and which is in communication with a low pressure drain passage such that the piezo elements are not exposed to the high pressure fluid. Isolation is obtained by a compensation cylinder movably disposed in an annular space between, and in sealing relationship with, the valve housing, the piezo stack being enclosed in a piezo guide tube which is sealingly connected to the valve housing.
