  • Patent number: 6459923
Abstract: A modular intervention bed for use with a medical tomographic imaging system having an associated patient transport device and an imaging device. The modular intervention bed comprises a trestle configured to engage a patient transport device, with the trestle having an intervention area. A patient couch movably mounted on the trestle, with the patient couch defining an opening corresponding to the intervention area. The couch comprises a plurality of patient mats with each mat connected to at least one other mat, a pair of rollers mounted on each mat in a spaced apart relationship with each roller proximate an outside edge of each mat. The modular intervention bed can be reconfigured by adding or removing a mat thereby moving the intervention area and opening to correspond with the portion of a patient under investigation during an intervention procedure guided by a medical tomographic imaging system.

  • Patent number: 6145467
Abstract: A magnetic field indicator mounts to an MRI system to indicate the presence of the polarizing magnetic field. An indicator wheel is mounted to a frame and is rotatable between an energized orientation in which a red colored region is seen through a window and a de-energized orientation in which a green region is aligned with the window. A weight biases the indicator wheel in the de-energized orientation and a ferrous rod rotates the wheel to its energized orientation when the polarizing field is present.

  • Patent number: 6026318
Abstract: A method is provided for measuring the weight of a medical imaging scanner patient. The scanner has a bore portion for receiving and housing the patient during a scan. Initially, a reclining apparatus associated with the scanner is provided, on which the patient can recline during the scan. A hydraulic lift mechanism is then used to position the reclining apparatus and the patient at bore level. The pressure within the hydraulic lift mechanism can then be measured as a function of downward force exerted by the reclining apparatus and the patient surface. Alternatively, the automatic measuring of patient mass, associated with the movement of the reclining apparatus and patient into the bore, can be determined by calculating instantaneous acceleration of the reclining apparatus and patient as the reclining apparatus and patient are slid into the bore.

  • Patent number: 5638595
Abstract: A method is provided for fabricating a gradient coil for an MR imaging system having an open magnet. The method includes forming a structure from thin conductive material such as copper, the structure generally comprising a section of a cylinder and a section of an annulus joined to an edge of the cylinder section as a flange. During a first cutting operation, a plurality of first groove segments are cut through the material, each of the first groove segments lying in one of a plurality of cutting zones selectively positioned around the structure, a strip of material positioned between two adjacent groove segments comprising a coil turn segment. The coil turn segments of a cutting zone are rigidly joined to one another and to a support frame comprising the outer edge of the structure by suitable means. Thereafter, a second cutting operation is performed, whereby a plurality of second groove segments are cut through the material to completely form the gradient coil.

  • Patent number: 5545995
Abstract: A calibration procedure for correcting geometric errors in MRI images due to gradient field non-linearities and magnetic field inhomogeneities includes performing a 3D scan on a calibration phantom. The calibration phantom contains an array of tapered rods that produce an array of spots in reconstructed slice images. Spot sizes and positions enable position errors to be measured throughout the bore of the imaging system. Corrective coefficients are produced from these 3D error measurements that enable subsequent patient images to be corrected for warping errors in object position.
