  • Patent number: 7837223
Abstract: Inflatable devices principally for vehicle occupant protection are addressed. Included among the devices are curtains or other cushions (18) with braided portions (42) along their lower edges (30) designed to form semi-rigid members when deployed. Unlike commercially-available vehicle curtains, inflation occurs from the bottom (where the semi-rigid member is formed) upward. The devices additionally optionally may include inflatable nodes (46) within the curtains (18) or otherwise extending from the cushions.

  • Patent number: 6547273
Abstract: An inflatable seat belt restraint system including a shoulder belt, an inflatable restraint, an inflation integrated inertia reel, and a shoulder belt anchor opposite to the inflation integrated inertial reel. The system can further include a lap belt and lap belt inertia reel. The inflation integrated inertia reel includes a webbing anchor, a drum having a pressure vessel, and a port for ducting inflation gas from the pressure vessel to the inflatable restraint. The inflation integrated inertia reel can further include an inflator in fluid communication with the pressure vessel. Upon deployment, gas flows from the inflator, into the pressure vessel, through the port, and into the inflatable restraint. The system can also include, a pressure-actuated locking mechanism locks the drum when the pressure vessel is pressurized. A corresponding method for deploying an inflatable restraint is also disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20020171233
Abstract: A system and method for protecting a vehicle occupant during a deceleration event, which integrates a dynamically deployed device (“DDD”) with a seat belt restraint system. The invention uses a seat belt to guide the deployment of a DDD (e.g., an air bag). The DDD is anchored to a vehicle. The DDD is slideably attached to a seat belt of the vehicle such that the dynamically deployed device, when deployed, slides along the seat belt and is held in position by the seat belt.

  • Patent number: 6126194
Abstract: A seat restraint system whose torso belt includes an inflatable structure that inflates upon impact to protect the occupants of a vehicle such as an automobile. The inflatable structure is linked to a gas generator and crash sensor. When an impact above a predetermined level of severity is detected, the gas generator is ignited, inflating the inflatable structure which contracts in length as it inflates. In a preferred embodiment, the inflatable structure is a braided tube. As the braided tube inflates, the diameter of the tube increases significantly and its length decreases significantly, due to the orientation of the fibers comprising the braided tube. The contraction in length pretensions the seat belt system by pulling any slack out of the seat belt systems. In a frontal impact, the inflated structure restricts the forward motion of an occupant and distributes crash loads over a larger occupant surface area to reduce both primary and secondary injuries.

  • Patent number: 6062143
Abstract: An inflatable system which uses a fast-burning propellant material distributed within the inflatable component of the system to generate the gas inflating the system. The invention preferably includes a distributed fast-burning igniter material, which may be enhanced with additional gas-generating materials to increase the quantities of gas generated, an optional layer, coating, or sheath of supplemental gas-generating material, an environmentally-sealed sheath to protect the enclosed materials from contamination and to improve the burn rates and efficiencies of the propellant and ignition materials, and an electronic squib used to actuate the igniter material upon a signal from the electronic sensor.

  • Patent number: 5351977
Abstract: An airbag assembly (12/112) is incorporated into a vehicle (10) that includes a steering assembly (16/116) and a firewall (18). The firewall (18) at least partially defines an occupant compartment (20) and separates the occupant compartment (20) from an external environment (22). In one embodiment, the steering assembly (16) includes a steering column (50) defining an inlet passageway (71) and a separate exhaust passageway (73). The passageways (71) and (73) communicate separately with an airbag (30) through a mouth portion (32) of the airbag. The inlet passageway (71) communicates with an inflator (40), and the exhaust passageway (73) communicates with the external environment (22). Inflation fluid travels through the inlet passageway (71) into the airbag (30), and inflation fluid is vented through the outlet passageway (73) to the external environment (22).

  • Patent number: 5263740
Abstract: An inflator assembly for inflating an inflatable vehicle occupant restraint includes a container defining a chamber with a rupturable wall. The chamber contains a first ignitable material and gas. The gas is directed from the container to the inflatable vehicle occupant restraint when the rupturable wall of the chamber is ruptured. The assembly further includes an initiator for rupturing the rupturable wall of the chamber and for igniting the first ignitable material inside the chamber. The initiator includes a second ignitable material. The second ignitable material produces a pressure wave and emits products of combustion when it is ignited by the initiator. The rupturable wall of the chamber is located in the path of the pressure wave and is ruptured by the pressure wave. The first ignitable material inside the chamber is located in the path of the products of combustion emitted by the second ignitable material and is ignited by the products of combustion.
