Patent number: 12546211Abstract: An untethered apparatus for measuring properties along a subterranean well includes a housing and one or more sensors configured to measure data along the subterranean well. The data includes one or more physical, chemical, geological or structural properties in the subterranean well. The untethered apparatus further includes a processor configured to control the one or more sensors measuring the data and to store the measured data, and a transmitter configured to transmit the measured data to a receiver arranged external to the subterranean well. Further, the untethered apparatus includes a controller configured to control the buoyancy or the drag of the untethered apparatus to control a position of the untethered apparatus in the subterranean well. The processor includes instructions defining measurement parameters for the one or more sensors of the untethered apparatus within the subterranean well.Type: GrantFiled: July 10, 2024Date of Patent: February 10, 2026Assignee: SAUDI ARABIAN OIL COMPANYInventors: Max Deffenbaugh, Gregory Ham, Jose Oliverio Alvarez, Gregory Bernero, Sunder Ramachandran, Miguel Gonzalez, Huseyin Seren, Sebastian Csutak, Christopher Powell

Patent number: 10809229Abstract: A downhole system includes a quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectrometer (QEPAS) configured to be positioned within a wellbore formed in a subterranean zone of a hydrocarbon formation, a sampling system coupled to the QEPAS, and a computer system connected to the QEPAS. The sampling system is configured to be positioned in the wellbore and obtain a sample of a wellbore fluid at a downhole location in the subterranean zone. The QEPAS is configured to spectroscopically scan the sample and to determine a plurality of quantities of a corresponding plurality of hydrocarbons in the same. The computer system includes one or more processors to perform operations including receiving the plurality of quantities of the plurality of hydrocarbons in the sample and determining a plurality of ratios, where each ratio is a ratio of one of the plurality of hydrocarbons with another of the plurality of hydrocarbons.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 2018Date of Patent: October 20, 2020Assignee: Saudi Arabian Oil CompanyInventors: Sebastian Csutak, Weichang Li, Angelo Sampaolo, Gregory Ham

Patent number: 7847671Abstract: A subsea data and power transmission apparatus includes primary and secondary open magnetic circuits with coils for wireless data and power transfer between a drilling tool and a drilling rig. The primary magnetic circuit is U-shaped and the secondary is O-shaped. Both magnetic systems are electrically insulated. The electrical signal and power are transferred from one magnetic circuit to another through an air or water gap between the magnetic circuits. The U-shaped and O-shaped magnetic circuits allow communication and power transfer remotely with no mechanical or electrical connectors.Type: GrantFiled: July 29, 2009Date of Patent: December 7, 2010Assignee: Perry Slingsby Systems, Inc.Inventors: Valeri Riachentsev, Joe Schouster, Rory Satterfield, Gregory Ham

Publication number: 20090255728Abstract: A device and a method for seabed and water bottom drilling, core sampling and measuring, include a vertically movable and horizontally fixed cross beam, a winch fixed to the cross beam and having a rope wound thereon, a drill head disposed on the cross beam, a spindle having a bore formed therein and being driven by the drill head and an overshot having one end connected to the rope and another end passing through the bore in the spindle for attachment to and detachment from a drilling tool of a drillstring. The spindle, the rope and the drillstring together define a common centerline during attachment and detachment of the overshot to and from a drilling tool and during drilling. A lift rod connected between the rope and the overshot can be pulled into the bore in the spindle prior to commencing rotary drilling for sealing the top of the bore.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 14, 2009Publication date: October 15, 2009Inventors: Allan Spencer, Gregory Ham
