  • Patent number: 6560246
Abstract: A laser arrangement comprising a ring cavity at least two gain portions in said ring cavity, an input-output coupling connected to said ring cavity, a discriminator means connected in said ring cavity and adapted to discriminate between a pumping signal and an output signal and pumping means for providing said pumping signal and connected to said gain portions of said ring cavity such that, upon activation of said pumping means, said laser arrangement operates as a laser producing a laser output at said input-output coupling.

  • Publication number: 20030053196
Abstract: A dynamic controller for a multi-channel EDFA-type optical amplifier is provided that is capable of providing a substantially tilt-free output over a range of selectable gain set points. The dynamic controller includes a variable optical attenuator coupled between the two amplification coils of the EDFA amplifier, and a control circuit that instructs the attenuator of an amount that each channel should be attenuated to achieve a tilt-free output at a selected gain point. The controller further includes a gain controller and a tilt controller connected to the control circuit of the variable optical attenuator for providing signals indicative of an average amount of per channel attenuation and a relative amount of per channel attenuation necessary to achieve a selected gain set point while reducing or eliminating tilt, respectively.

  • Patent number: 6441953
Abstract: A multi-stage optical fiber amplifier comprises a first gain stage amplifying and optical signal; a pumping source coupled to the first gain stage, a second gain stage coupled to the first gain to further amplifying the optical signal to a desired output signal power, and a second pumping source coupled to the second gain stage. The second pumping source is preferably an erbium-doped fiber laser and has an operating wavelength between about 1520 nm and about 1620 nm. This amplifier achieves good noise figure and high output powers.

  • Patent number: 6339495
Abstract: An optical amplifier includes an optical feedback resonant laser cavity (OFRC) including a power dependent loss element (PDLE) having the characteristic that as the incident laser power on the PDLE increases the cavity loss decreases. The OFRC with the PDLE provides optical gain control or optical power control for a WDM amplifier or a single channel power equalization amplifier (PEA), respectively. A 1×N×N WADM node incorporating more than one of these amplifiers, at least some of which commonly share a pump source, and a method for controlling a transient power change in a single channel optical amplifier or reducing a DC gain error in a WDM optical amplifier that are subject to dynamically variable operating conditions at an input of the amplifier, are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4921544
Abstract: An electrophoretic technique and apparatus for decontamination and sterilizing of contact lenses are provided. The lenses are placed in respective perforated containers and inserted in a buffer solution of suitable pH value. An electric field is established in the solution by a pair of spaced electrodes. Contaminants on the lenses become charged and are attracted to a respective electrode, thereby cleaning and sterilizing the lenses.
