  • Patent number: 5676226
Abstract: A sprag and roller one-way clutch assembly (10) including an outer cage (12), an inner cage (14) and a ribbon spring (16) for use with a clutch having outer and inner races (70, 72). The outer and inner cages (12, 14) each defines a plurality of corresponding sprag and roller openings (20, 30, 22, 32). The ribbon spring (16) defines a plurality of corresponding sprag and roller windows (40, 42). A plurality of spaced sprags (50) extends between and through the corresponding sprag openings (20, 30) defined by the outer and inner cages (12, 14) and through the corresponding sprag windows (40, 42) defined by the ribbon spring (16). A plurality of spaced rollers (60) extends between the corresponding roller openings (22, 32) defined by the outer and inner cages (12, 14) and through the corresponding roller windows (42) defined by the ribbon spring (16). Each of the rollers (60) has a substantially cylindrical configuration.

  • Patent number: 5445255
Abstract: An improved one-way clutch includes an outer race having an annular inner surface, an inner race having an annular outer surface disposed coaxially with the outer race, a plurality of sprags spaced circumferentially between the inner surface and outer surface, a sprag holder for holding the sprags in an annular space between the annular surfaces and a plurality of inertia resistance members having an arcuately conforming engagement surface mounted about the sprag holder, the arcuately conforming engagement surface being in engagement with one of the said inner surface and outer surface to provide torque resistant drag between the sprag holder and one of the inner and outer surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5234390
Abstract: An improved gear transmission (10) includes a one-way clutch (52) for connecting together selectively two drive elements to establish a plural torque flow path through the transmission (10) and the clutch (52) includes at least one inner race (52B) and one outer race (52A), each of the races having coaxial inner and outer race portions, the outer surface (112) of the outer race portion (52B) defined by a first undulating surface, the inner surface (113) of a mating drive element defined by a second undulating surface in conjugate registration with the first undulating surface, the profiles of the first and second undulating surfaces (112,113) being controlled to provide a controlled clearance therebetween reducing shock loading at the interface of the inner and outer race portions through a gradual lock-up through a controlled wind-up of the mating members and reducing vibration in the gear elements.

  • Patent number: 5183139
Abstract: An overrunning clutch comprises opposed inner (12) and outer (14) races dning an annular space (16) therebetween, rollers (40) or sprags (18), and a cage (22), the cage (22) being disposed in the annular space (16) and cooperating with the sprags (18). The cage (22) includes a plurality of interconnecting elements (24,41), each of which has an inner side (28) facing the inner race (12), the inner side of each interconnecting element (24,41) being contoured to redirect at least a portion of the lubrication supplied through oil holes (20) back toward the inner race (12).

  • Patent number: 5176232
Abstract: A roller clutch (20) having a cage (32) having a plurality of barbed posts 40) installed between substantially coaxial clutch races (24,26) for aligning and mounting bearing blocks (42) around the cage (32) for fixed rotational movement and including a contoured pocket (44) on one side for nesting a roller (22) and a spring (48) mounted on the other side that circumferentially urges a roller (22) nested in an adjacent bearing block (42) to permit stable performance under high speed operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 5042628
Abstract: A roller one-way clutch assembly has a single integral spacer element formed as a ring having an I.D. surface which is supported on a shoulder of the inner race of the clutch assembly and having an O.D. surface supported on a shoulder of the outer race to radially space the inner race and the outer race for precision accommodation of a caged roller one-way clutch in an operating space therebetween and wherein the outer race further includes an annular groove for receiving retention tabs on the ring to fix it axially on the outer race so as to provide retention of the roller clutch in the operating space between the inner and outer races.
