Images of a comminuted substance are captured by the camera, with particle characteristics being quantified and entered into a data processor of the portable communications device. This information is combined with archived data such as known characteristics of ground coffee. The combined information is processed to predict the final characteristics of the brewed coffee. Predicted final characteristics may be displayed on a display of the portable communications device.
