    Abstract: An improved ball valve for lethal gas or fluid service is disclosed having a novel triple redundant stem to bonnet seal design. A ceramic seal ring forms the primary stem to bonnet seal. The ceramic seal ring has a first seal surface lapped for sealing engagement with a corresponding lapped surface on the stem and a second seal surface lapped for sealing engagement with a corresponding lapped surface on the bonnet. The ceramic seal ring first seal surface lapped for sealing engagement with a corresponding lapped surface on said stem and the corresponding lapped surface on the stem may be frustoconically or spherically shaped. An elastomeric seal and a compression type seal between the stem and bonnet act as redundant seals. A preloading means to maintain the ceramic seal ring and lapped sealing surfaces on the bonnet and stem in sealing engagement is shown.

    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to an apparatus which can be installed for opening and closing fluid flow production from a formation penetrated by a cased well borehole and connected therewith through perforations. The production tubing string is installed with a moveable sleeve having a closed and open position. The moveable sleeve defines a controllable pathway into the production tubing string. In conjunction with that, there is an internal receptacle formed in the production tubing string to enable landing of a sonde there at. The sonde connects firmly at the receptacle. Similarly, the moveable sleeve in the production tubing string has a receptacle it in which enables unique landing of a latching mechanism, the latching mechanism extending along the axis of the production tubing string at the urging of a motor in said sonde. The motor operates an elongate extendible member to move the sleeve from the closed to the open position and back.

    Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a formation test tool having similar, even identical, fist and second test probes which have supported snorkels thereon. They extend from the tool into a particular formation. One serves as an inlet and the other serves an outlet so that fluid can be removed from the formation, directed through the tool body, and returned to the formation through the other of the two snorkels. The fluid flow passes a test instrument which detects changes indicative of reduced well fluid invasion in the connate formation. A test procedure is also set forth for testing this fluid.

    Abstract: A perforating gun assembly is set forth. It incorporates a swivel connected with a cable head assembly and a navigation system for determining the instantaneous angle of the tool with respect to a vertical reference. There are first and second spaced cages formed of sleeves supported on bearing assemblies. The sleeves support free wheeling rollers which engage the casing when the tool is in the slant hole region of the well. There is an eccentric which falls downwardly, i.e., pointing toward gravity, and thereby defines a vertical reference and hence a horizontal reference. This eccentric mounts an elongate tubular housing for the shaped charges. Initially, the angle of firing of the shaped charges is adjusted at the time of installation with respect to the horizon and that in turn is correlated to the formation of interest in the well borehole which is then perforated with perforations which are parallel to the formation bedding plane.

    Abstract: A formation tester is set forth. The device utilizes a snorkel extending from the formation tester to obtain a pressure test and collect samples from a formation of interest. The apparatus includes multiple sample storage containers, thereby cooperating with an equalizing valve to selectively isolate the snorkel from fluid and fluid pressures in the well. A control valve system in a hydraulic circuit operate backup shoes and a snorkel seal until testing is over to assure sealing against well fluid invasion in unconsolidated formation. A speed up sequence for both the backup piston and cylinder arrangement as well as the pad setting piston and snorkel arrangement is illustrated.

    Abstract: In a formation tester constructed with an extendable probe driven by hydraulic means, the means being connected to a hydraulic circuit, an improved apparatus is set forth which includes a hydraulic fluid multiplier means. This multiplier means is connected between the pump and the means extending the probe and backup shoes. The multiplier means incorporates a step piston and a large cylinder having a step conforming with the piston. Suitable seals are placed on the piston. The piston drives initially to deliver a high volume low pressure flow to extend rapidly the probe, and completes its operation with a low volume high pressure flow to assure proper setting. This enables more rapid operation and more rapid completion of formation testing.
