    Abstract: The invention improves the performance of Multiple Downcomer fractionation trays and comprises placing a bed-like layer of packing material closely adjacent the bottom surface of the tray. The packing is located in the so-called "disengagement" zone under the tray and does not extend down to the tray below. Means comprising perforations in the downcomer sidewalls are provided to spread liquid from the tray above onto the packing material.
