  • Patent number: 4849395
Abstract: Amorphous metal/magnesium silicates of the general formulaM.sub.x Mg.sub.y (SiO.sub.2).nH.sub.2 O.where M is a divalent, reducible metal atom from the group consisting of Cu, FeII, Co and Ni, x and y are numbers which together can add up to a value of 1.5 and n after drying, expressed in % by weight, ranges from 0 to 80 are prepared by subjecting a freshly precipitated magnesium silicate to an ion exchange, washing the product and then neutralizing it with an alkali and are used in catalytic reactions after the reducible metal in the metal/magnesium silicates has been converted into the metallic state with a reducing gas.

  • Patent number: 4436833
Abstract: A process for the preparation of methanol by reacting a gaseous mixture of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen at an elevated temperature and under superatmospheric pressure over a catalyst which contains zinc, copper and aluminum, the catalyst being prepared from a co-crystalline material of the formulaCu.sub.2.2 Zn.sub.2.8 (OH).sub.6 (CO.sub.3).sub.2,containing aluminum hydroxide as a structual promoter, by calcination and reduction at from 160.degree. to 350.degree. C. The novel catalyst has the advantage of giving a substantially increased space-time yield and having a longer life.

  • Patent number: 4393251
Abstract: Hydrogenation catalysts which are prepared from mixed crystals of copper-zinc compounds, obtained by precipitation, of the formulaCu.sub.1.5-3 Zn.sub.1-2.5 (CO.sub.3).sub.1-2 (OH).sub.4-6.(H.sub.2 O).sub.0-1by decomposition at 200.degree.-500.degree. C., and are used for the catalytic preparation of propanediols of the formula ##STR1## where the R's may be identical or different and each is an aliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical, or the two R's together with the adjacent carbon atom are members of an alicyclic ring, by hydrogenating hydroxypropionaldehydes of the formula ##STR2## where R has the above meanings, and to processes for the preparation of propanediols, using such catalysts. The propane-1,3-diols obtainable by the novel process are valuable starting materials for the preparation of lubricants, plastics, surface coatings and synthetic resins, for example of polyesters derived from the propanediols.

  • Patent number: 3950368
Abstract: A two-stage process for the manufacture of methane from hydrocarbons is described. In the first stage, the hydrocarbons are converted into methane-rich gases, using the nickel catalyst described below. The cracked gases thus obtained are cooled and converted into methane-rich gases in a further catalytic process stage, using a methanization catalyst or the nickel catalyst mentioned below. To produce the nickel catalyst, the compound Ni.sub.6 Al.sub.2 (OH).sub.16.CO.sub.3.4H.sub.2 O is prepared in aqueous solution. The catalyst is obtained from this compound by drying, calcination and subsequent reduction in a stream of hydrogen whilst maintaining very specific temperature gradients between the drying stage and the calcination stage.

  • Patent number: 3941721
Abstract: The compound Ni.sub.6 Al.sub.2 (OH).sub.16. CO.sub.3. 4H.sub.2 O is isolated from aqueous solution. The catalyst is obtained from this compound by drying, calcination and subsequent reduction in a stream of hydrogen, whilst maintaining very specific temperature gradients between the drying stage and the calcination stage. A process for the manufacture of gases containing methane from hydrocarbons by steam cracking, in which the abovementioned catalyst is employed, is also described.
