  • Patent number: 7398004
Abstract: A computer implemented method for authoring a multimedia compact disc is provided. The method includes obtaining multimedia content from at least one source and enabling manipulation of the obtained multimedia content. The method further includes arranging the obtained multimedia content in a graphical hierarchical tree structure. • Patent number: 7149978
Abstract: A method for managing the configuration of a host adapter is provided. The method provides for the access and configuration of a host adapter from within the computer operating system. Icons and graphical user interfaces are displayed providing a plurality of configuration options and diagnostic tools to allow access, evaluation, management and testing of host adapters and peripheral devices connected thereto in a manner with the look and feel of any other computer system device. When configuration changes are input, the method provides a prompt indicating the system must be rebooted for the changes to be implemented, and a reboot command for the user to execute. While executing the reboot command, the system flashes the host adapter configuration changes to the EEPROM on the host adapter, and the system initializes in accordance with the changed configuration settings.

  • Patent number: 6934722
Abstract: A method for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system includes creating a linked list of application components installed on the computer system. The nested directories are then traced back to find a target directory for each application component in the linked list. Thereafter, a request to find a selected application is received from a calling module. The method may further include the operations of searching the linked list for a target directory for each component of the selected application, and making the target directory for each component of the selected application available to the calling module, preferably by returning the target directories to the calling module. A computer readable media for finding application components installed on a computer system for use in a backup system associated with the computer system also is described.

  • Patent number: 6901493
Abstract: In a method for protecting data of a computer system having a hard drive with an operating system stored on a first partition thereof, the operating system is copied from the first partition of the hard drive to a second partition of the hard drive and selected data is copied from the hard drive to a backup location. Thereafter, if a crash that prevents the computer system from booting from the operating system stored on the first partition of the hard drive occurs, then the computer system is booted from the copy of the operating system stored on the second partition of the hard drive. Next, if the selected data needs to be restored back to the hard drive, then the backup location to which the selected data was copied is accessed and the selected data is restored back to the hard drive. In one embodiment, the backup location is a storage resource connected to the Internet.

  • Patent number: 6532535
Abstract: A method for managing a secondary storage device connected to a computer system having a primary storage device includes hooking a partition session selector device driver in a layered drive structure. An application programming interface call to obtain information related to storage devices connected to the computer system is then performed. The application programming interface call is trapped and the partition session selector device driver is communicated with directly via an interface call to manage a user accessible representation of the primary and secondary storage devices.

  • Patent number: 6477629
Abstract: Disclosed is an apparatus, a system, a computer readable media, and a method for protecting data of a computer system. The method includes: (a) connecting a peripheral storage device to the computer system; (b) preparing a storage media of the peripheral storage device to be a protection enabled media; (c) selecting a backup set of data stored in a hard drive of the computer system, the backup set of data includes a default set of boot files and operating system files; (d) creating a spare tire backup using file-based copying from the hard-drive of the computer system to the storage media of the peripheral storage device; (e) enabling the peripheral storage device to incrementally copy portions of the backup set of data from the hard drive of the computer system during normal use; and (f) booting the computer system from the peripheral storage device when a failure occurs with the hard drive that disables normal booting.

  • Patent number: 6385707
Abstract: A method and system for copying files between drives of a computer system is provided. The method begins where files are selected to be copied from a first drive of the computer system to a second drive of the computer system. The selected files include operating system files, program files and data files. The method then proceeds to commencing an initial copying of the selected files. While the initial files are being copied, a list of non-copied files is generated. The list of non-copied files represent files that are locked by an operating system. A raw data copy is performed during the initial copying by referencing a FAT table of the drive from which data is copied from for each file in the list of non-copied files. A shut down of the operating system is then commenced. The operating system is configured to shut down and release the files previously locked by the operating system.

  • Patent number: 6374366
Abstract: An automated method, system and computer readable media for repairing a hard drive of a computer system is provided. The method includes detecting a failure in the hard drive and then resuming work from a backup drive after the failure with the hard drive is detected. The repair of the hard drive includes launching a system diagnose engine that is configured to call on a footprint database to analyze physical and logical drive changes associated with the computer system. The footprint database includes information regarding the physical and logical drive of the computer system before the failure was detected with the hard drive. Then, an initial action that is to be taken in order to repair the hard drive is returned by the system diagnose engine.

  • Patent number: 6289426
Abstract: A computer implemented method for preparing a backup drive that is connected to a computer system having a primary hard drive is provided. The method includes generating a list of devices that are connected to the computer system. The list of devices includes at least the primary hard drive and a secondary drive. The method then advances to enable the selection of the secondary drive to be the backup drive of the computer system. The backup drive is then partitioned to match a partition arrangement of the primary hard drive of the computer system. Once partitioned, the method proceeds by fake formatting the partitions of the backup drive. The fake formatting is configured to only partially format the partitions of the backup drive. After fake formatting, the method moves to reboot the computer system from the primary hard drive. The partitions of the backup drive are then formatted implementing a complete formatting scheme. Once completely formatted, data from the primary drive is copied to the backup drive.
