The method includes: reacting a lignin composition with a hypochlorite composition having about 5% to about 70% available chlorine; and reacting the hypochlorite treated lignin with hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of about 5% to about 50% to produce the light colored lignin, wherein the lignin composition includes at least one of sulfonated lignin, lignosulfonate, or both.
