  • Publication number: 20070149134
Abstract: A method for operating a mobile equipment (ME 10) in a wireless network (12), the method having steps of (A) determining a parameter that is indicative of a signal quality experienced by the ME, such as by determining a speed of the ME; (B) calculating in the ME an indication of link quality, the calculation employing a filtering operation having a filter length that is a function of the determined parameter, such as speed or derivative of the speed of the ME; and (C) reporting the calculated indication of link quality to the wireless network. The step of determining includes steps of (a) deriving an indication of ME speed in the wireless network; and (b) transmitting the speed indication to the ME using a point-to-point message. In a preferred embodiment the step of transmitting places the ME speed indication in padding bits of the point-to-point message, such as one sent on a Packet Associated Control Channel (PACCH).

  • Publication number: 20060291416
Abstract: A packet-switched handover from a first cell to a second cell in a cellular network is discussed. Packet-switched services are provided for a mobile station in the first cell based on a set of information relating to provision of packet-switched services and a protocol for handling provision of packet-switched services for mobile stations, said protocol being a protocol between a cell and a respective control network element. In a control network element relating to the first cell a first message is received, which indicates a request for a packet-switched handover for a mobile station. In response to said first message, a second message is sent to the second cell. This second message requests creation of a set of information relating to provision of packet-switched services for the mobile station in the second cell, and the second message belongs to said protocol for handling provision of packet-switched services for mobile stations.

  • Publication number: 20060281459
Abstract: In case of both circuit-switched and a packet-switched connection handover from a source (200) to a target (510) radio access network or base station subsystem a new target ID indication message (415.1; 415.2) is sent to a core network node (422) either from a core network element (215) or from the target radio access network or base station subsystem, depending on whether there is an interface (Gs) between the core network element and the core network node. In one embodiment, in contrast to the prior art, the new target ID indication message is mandated to only identify one target base station or target radio access network.

  • Publication number: 20060256749
Abstract: The present invention relates to identifying resources allocated in a cellular network for a mobile station for packet-switched services. A first identifier is used for identifying a mobile station, and a second identifier is used for identifying resources allocated for packet-switched services for the mobile station. When a mobile station is entering or has entered a second cell from a first cell, a value of a first type for the second identifier is determined. The first type of the second identifier is for use in both the first cell and the second cell for transmitting packet-switched data between the cellular network and the mobile station.

  • Publication number: 20060234709
Abstract: Before execution of a routing area update (RAU) procedure associated with a handover of a mobile station (40) from a source cell to a target cell in a mobile telecommunication system, a handover required message (14) is sent to a core network (CN) from a source base station (16) in the source cell having a mobile station identifier (IMSI), an identifier of at least one target cell routing area code (RAC) and a temporary logical link identity (TLLI). In response thereto, a handover command message (32) is sent to the source base station from the core network having a packet-temporary mobile subscriber identity (P-TMSI) for transfer to the mobile station in ciphered form over a radio interface between the source base station and the mobile station so that the mobile station is able to send packet-switched (PS) data on an uplink before the RAU procedure is executed.

  • Publication number: 20060221888
Abstract: A method and equipment by which a mobile station receiving a point-to-multicast (p-t-m) transmission from a radio access network (RAN) of a wireless communication system communicates information to the RAN of use in the mobile changing to a neighboring cell for receiving the p-t-m transmission; in particular, the mobile station indicates to the RAN whether cell reselection parameters for the neighboring cell have been received, and/or whether neighboring cell information indicating parameters for receiving the p-t-m transmission in the neighboring-cell have also been received by the mobile. In a typical embodiment, the mobile would indicate not only whether parameters for receiving the p-t-m transmission in the neighboring cell have been received, but which set of parameters have been received. The information of use in the mobile changing to the neighboring cell is communicated to the RAN in an acknowledgment message uplinked on a packet access control channel.

  • Publication number: 20060079242
Abstract: A system and method for minimizing signalling loads due to mutual exchanges of information between neighboring cells in which the same session is transmitted, and for reducing the time required to transmit MBMS neighbor cell information messages in a serving cell when a higher level of signalling occurs, wherein all broadcast control channel (BCCH) carriers indicated in a BCCH allocation are monitored by a mobile station (MS). A list of the cells having the strongest non-serving carriers is updated as often as the duration of the running average for measurements of the BCCH allocation. Base transceiver station identity codes (BSICs) and neighboring cell indexes of BCCH carriers are added to an uplink radio link control/medium access control (RLC/MAC) message that is transmitted to a network.

  • Publication number: 20060072534
Abstract: A system and method for reducing idle mode power consumption for mobile stations (MS) that have joined a Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) session and are waiting for the session to start. The invention is also directed to reducing the power consumption of an MS for which an MBMS session is inactive. In alternative aspects of the invention, the power consumption of mobile stations is reduced in the absence of ongoing MBMS session activity. Reduced power consumption is achieved by eliminating the need to read notification messages from an MBMS specific notification paging group when the notification message is for a different MBMS session than the paging group that the MS has currently joined.

  • Publication number: 20060058034
Abstract: A system and method for minimizing the gap in service during the reception of an MBMS session due to the reselection of a neighboring cell in which that MBMS session is not ongoing, wherein a mobile station (MS) indicates its target cell and MBMS service id (i.e., BSIC, neighboring cell index, and Temporary MBMS Group Identity (TMGI)) to a network by sending this information to the network in an RLC/MAC message, e.g., a packet downlink ACK/NACK or with a new message. If the network has resources available for allocation, the network is permitted to allocate these resources for the MBMS session indicated by the MS and send corresponding MBMS neighbor cell information to the MS upon receipt of the packet downlink ACK/NACK or the new message. When the MS receives the MBMS neighbor cell information, it will then reselect to the target cell identified by the MBMS neighbor cell information.

  • Publication number: 20050169289
Abstract: A method with which cellular network terminals are informed of a possibility to use services of 3G mobile communication networks in a radio access network. A spare bit of the broadcast message SI3 of GSM system is defined as a bit indicating, whether the current GERAN cell supports UMTS service through the Iu interface or not. In a favourable case, another SI message is broadcast including a description of the PBCCH where Iu information for mobile stations is placed. Should the GERAN support also the GPRS service, said another message is SI13, and if the GERAN does not support the GPRS service, said another message is SI13alt. This message can only be employed by UMTS capable mobile stations. By means of the invention the information presumed by the use of the UMTS network can quickly be acquired by a mobile station, which for example arrives in a GERAN cell.

  • Patent number: 6870858
Abstract: A method increases the wireless information carrying capability of a single bit-limited message by providing a plurality of different training sequences TS, such as a conventional 41 bit TS and two new 41-bit TSs, each with low cross-correlation and high auto-correlation. One of the TSs is selected, appended to an 11-bit Packet Channel Request message, and transmitted. The message with TS is detected and the message is interpreted in light of the TS. In EGPRS, selection of TS1 indicates one of a one-phase access request (OPAR), a short access request (SAR), or a two-phase access request (TPAR) with 8-PSK modulation capability on the uplink. Selection of TS2 indicates one of OPAR, SAR, or TPAR with GMSK modulation capability only on the uplink. Selection of TS_GSM indicates one of GPRS, OPAR, SAR or TPAR, or one of a page response, cell update, mobility management procedure, or a single block without a TBF establishment message.

  • Publication number: 20050047359
Abstract: The invention relates to switching between a point-to-multipoint channel and a point-to-point channel for transmitting multicast data from a mobile communication network to a mobile station. According to a first aspect of the invention, the mobile station determines the link quality of a point-to-multipoint channel employed for the transmission and requests from the network a switch to a point-to-point channel in case the determined link quality is too low. According to a second aspect of the invention, the network estimates the link quality of a point-to-multipoint channel while using at least a point-to-point channel for the transmission of multicast data, and orders the mobile station to switch to this point-to-multipoint channel, in case the estimated link quality of the point-to-multipoint channel is sufficiently high.
