Abstract: A process is described to make a dihydroxydiphenol sulfone product with a 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenol sulfone purity in excess of 90 wt. % by reaction of phenol and concentrated sulfuric acid in a solvent mixture containing a lower-boiling and a higher-boiling hydrocarbon, removal by azeotropic distillation of water, hydrocarbon, and phenol, phase separation of the distillate, and return of at least the phenol to the reaction at a rate which maintains a phenol to sulfuric acid mol ratio in the reaction of at least 2 to 1.

Abstract: A small amount of hydrogen sulfide, an olefin, a mercaptan, an epoxide, a phosphite or a phosphine are added to a zinc dialkyldithiophosphate salt to decrease the rate of color generation upon storage and/or exposure to heat.

Abstract: A novel catalyst component and process for polymerization of ethylene or an ethylene containing mixture with a terminal olefin which consists essentially of contacting under polymerizing conditions said ethylene or mixture with (a) the reaction product of a Group IVB, Group VB or Group VIB transition metal compound and an organotin compound containing at least one reactive OH group and, (b) an organometallic compound.

Abstract: Disclosed are a composition of matter, a process for making said composition, and a lubricating oil composition having improved anti-wear properties containing an effective amount of said composition of matter.The composition of matter comprises olefin-dimercapto-thiadiazole compositions, especially an oil soluble reaction product of an olefin; lithium, sodium or potassium 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole or mixtures thereof; and a member selected from the group consisting of S.sub.2 Cl.sub.2, SCl.sub.2, S.sub.2 Br.sub.2, SBr.sub.2, R-S-Cl, R-S-Br, and mixtures thereof, wherein R comprises C.sub.1 -C.sub.100 hydrocarbyl or bromo, chloro or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbyl.Some of these compositions can be represented as follows: ##STR1## wherein X comprises R.sub.1 -SS-R.sub.2, wherein R.sub.1 comprises a C.sub.6 -C.sub.100 hydrocarbyl or bromo, chloro or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbyl, and R.sub.2 comprises R.sub.1 or ##STR2## and wherein Y comprises H or X. Abstract: Disclosed are a process for manufacturing metal dithiophospates, and metal dithiophosphate compositions. The process for manufacturing zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel dithiophosphates comprises reacting phosphorus pentasulfide with one or more alcohols to form a dithiophosphoric acid; neutralizing said dithiophosphoric acid with zinc, barium, cadmium, magnesium or nickel base in the presence of an acidic promoter; and reacting a substantial portion of the excess acidic promoter with a weak base. The metal dithiophosphates and lubricating oils containing said dithiophosphates are also disclosed.

Abstract: Disclosed are lubricating oil compositions containing from about 0.01 weight percent to about 5 weight percent of oil-soluble multifunctional additive having the general formula ##STR1## where A. X.sub.1 is --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR.sub.2, --S--PS--(OR).sub.2, or --O--P(OR).sub.2, and X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 are chlorine, bromine, --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR.sub.2, --S--PS--(OR).sub.2, --OP(OR).sub.2, or R; orB. X.sub.1 is --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR.sub.2, --S--PS--(OR).sub.2, or --O--P--(OR).sub.2, and X.sub.2 and X.sub.3 are chlorine, bromine, --S--CS--OR, --S--CS--NR.sub.2, --S--PS--(OR).sub.2, --O--P--(OR).sub.2 or --HN--R'where R comprises hydrocarbyl groups or chlorine, bromine or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbyl; and R' comprises hydrocarbyl, or hydroxy, amine or amide substituted hydrocarbyl. The lubricating oil compositions have improved extreme pressure, dispersancy or anti-oxidant properties.

Abstract: Disclosed are lubricating oil compositions containing from about 0.01 weight percent to about 5 weight percent of an oil-soluble multifunctional additive comprising:A. aniline disulfide dihydrocarbyl phosphoramide; orB. aniline disulfide dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate; orC. aniline disulfide-phospho-sulfurized olefin;Where the hydrocarbyl groups are entirely hydrocarbon, or chloro, bromo or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbon. These additives may be the reaction product of bis-aniline disulfide with ##EQU1## c. phosphosulfurized olefin;Where R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are hydrocarbyl or chloro, bromo or hydroxy substituted hydrocarbyl. The disclosed compositions have improved extreme pressure, anti-wear, anti-oxidant, or dispersancy properties.
