  • Patent number: 4795201
Abstract: A method of knotting with a clamp adjacent an axis and a two-jaw knotting head rotatable about the axis comprises the steps of first wrapping a strand around an object to be trussed with the strand ends together and gripping and retaining the strand ends together in the clamp with one of the strand end portions passing under the jaws of the knotting head and then upward to the object, the other strand end portion passing over the knotting head between the one end portion and the axis and then downward to the object, and the strand end portions crossing between the knotting head and the object being trussed. Then the knotting head is rotated through less than one full revolution with the jaws closed together to bring the crossing point of the strands onto the jaws and loop the one end portion around the jaws. The jaws are then opened and the head rotated through the balance of the revolution to engage both end portions between the jaws between the clamp and the axis.

  • Patent number: 4785730
Abstract: A baling machine according to the invention has a frame having walls defining an elongated compaction chamber having a front end provided with a transversely open intake to which a stream of crop is fed substantially continuously. At least one compacting member is periodically displaced in the chamber between a front position forward of the intake and a back position rearward of the intake by an appropriate drive so as to rearwardly compact crop in the chamber. A plurality of pushers are each displaceable between an advanced position projecting into the chamber and only partially blocking the intake and a retracted position substantially out of the chamber by a linkage that advances the pushers into their advanced position only when the member is rearward of the intake and of the pushers. Thus advance of the pushers into the advanced position immediately after movement of the compacting member rearward past the pushers parts the stream of crop between the pushers and compacting member.

  • Patent number: 4714204
Abstract: An impeller-type cutter drum for a chopper has a drum body including three drum disks arranged side-by-side and supporting two rows of blade holders which are spaced about the circumference of the drum body. Each blade holder supports a chopping blade and extends between a respective one of the outer disks and the center disk upwardly in an upwardly inclined and oblique manner. The front portion of each blade holder is shaped as an impeller which is arranged at constant distance to and has corresponding inclination as the chopping blade. Each impeller has an arc-shaped deflector portion immediately adjacent the centered drum and extends in a plane approximately adapted to the plane of the drum shaft which support the disks.

  • Patent number: 4592514
Abstract: A chopper has a housing centered on an axis and having a radially open input and a radially open output spaced angularly therefrom as well as a pair of axially oppositely open intakes, and a cutter drum rotatable in the housing about the axis and having a pair of end plates transverse of the axis and having axially oppositely directed faces confronting the respective intakes and a plurality of blades secured to and between the end plates and having cutting edges defining on rotation of the drum an orbit centered on the axis. Respective pluralities of vanes at the end plates can be secured either to the respective end plates in in-service positions extending generally radially thereon so that rotation of the drum moves the vanes to draw air in the axial intakes and expel it through the radial output or in an out-of-service position in which they do not move appreciable air. The vanes can be secured in the out-of-service position also to the respective end plates but extending generally only angularly.

  • Patent number: 4525751
Abstract: A video disc record of the constant angular velocity type (CAV) includes a spiral groove of constant pitch formed in a band on a surface thereof. The groove has a substantially constant nominal vertical dimension and vertical displacements which taper monotonically from an outer radius of the band to an inner radius. One component of the vertical displacement of the groove conveys an FM carrier wave of constant amplitude and relatively high frequency representative of picture information. A second component of the vertical displacement conveys one or more lower frequency FM carrier waves representative of sound information. The amplitude of the second component varies monotonically as a function of the groove radius within the record band to provide a disc having an improved audio FM carrier-to-noise ratio with no substantial perceptible increase in undesirable sound beat effects in images displayed when the disc is played.

  • Patent number: 4431487
Abstract: In order to provide an improved seal between matrixes and their replicas, as well as eliminating or substantially reducing the problem of premature separation of the replicas from the matrixes, a circumferential spiral groove of a substantially rectangular configuration is cut into the outermost circumferential area of the matrix. The rectangular spiral groove is cut beyond the portion of the matrix which will be used as the molding surface of the stamper. The rectangular groove is substantially larger than the V-shaped groove of audio records and is much larger than the V-shaped grooves used on high density information discs. Because of the larger size and the substantially rectangular geometric configuration of the grooves, the rectangular spiral groove forms a highly effective seal between the matrix and the replica.

  • Patent number: 4429678
Abstract: A cutting stylus adapted for mechanically cutting a deep groove, which may be used in lapping the keel on a playback stylus, is provided. The stylus includes a tapering body, a constricted terminal region and shoulders joining the tapering body and the constricted terminal region. The shape of the constricted terminal region is complementary to the shape of the keel tip on the playback stylus. The terminating portion of the stylus tip has a substantially flat cutting face, a pair of side surfaces extending from the side cutting edges of the cutting face which taper at a slight angle to provide clearance to the side cutting edges, and a bottom surface extending from the bottom cutting edge of the cutting face at an angle which provides relief to the bottom cutting edge.

  • Patent number: 4341952
Abstract: A video disc record suitable for use with a video disc player apparatus is provided with a label for identifying the program material stored on the surface of the record. The label is formed in a machine readable format which comprises grooves in the surface of the record. In one format whorls of a spiral groove of a first pitch are spaced alternately with whorls of a spiral groove of a second pitch. A readout apparatus comprises a light beam which is arranged to scan the grooved label and a detector which is arranged to sense the light beam reflected from the disc record surface. Light striking a grooved section of first pitch is reflected in a substantially specular direction while light striking a grooved section of second pitch is substantially scattered out of the specular direction. The detector is arranged to collect the light reflected into the specular direction.

  • Patent number: 4329832
Abstract: A pickup head for long-stalk crops, generally grown in rows, such as corn, especially for a field chopper or harvester, has a multiplicity (more than three) of mouths each aligned with a respective row and adapted to guide the crop into the throat of the machine. According to the invention, each of the mouths is provided with a respective guide channel, two of the guide channels merging ahead of the throat along the path of the crop toward the latter. Along each of the guide channels prior to the merger, a respective chain or other advancing mechanism is provided, the advancing mechanism of one of the channels continuing beyond the merger point to the throat of the machine. The arrangement permits a large number of rows to be swept although the throat of the machine is substantially narrower than the width of the intake side of the pickup head.

  • Patent number: 4143504
Abstract: A harvester for a multirow corn crop comprises a cutting head whose leading edge is formed with individual cutting members at each of a plurality of channels. The channels run rearwardly and unite at the rear portion of the head. Each of the channels is provided along one flank with a yieldable wall and along the other flank with a chain having entraining members reaching substantially across the full width and height of the channel. The entraining members are preferably of L-shape in plan view and have a pair of friction strips resting against the respective wall of the channel above and below the chains.
