  • Patent number: 7788961
Abstract: A system and method are described for ballizing and measuring a workpiece bore hole. In one embodiment, a ballizing unit having a distal end removably coupled to a ballizing member moves the ballizing member from a first position within the bore hole to a second position. A metrology unit having a distal end removably coupled to the ballizing member moves the ballizing member from the second position back to the first position. A sensor detects a force exerted on the ballizing member by the workpiece at a third position, which is located between the first and second positions.

  • Patent number: 6933643
Abstract: In one embodiment, a plurality of axially oriented bearings defined along gaps between rotor and stator are provided to provide radial stiffness to the system; and these bearings are coupled together by radially oriented gaps. Grooves and/or magnets may be defined in order to maintain the stability and relative spacing of the gaps, while allowing free relative rotation of parts of the system with minimum power loss. A central conical bearing may be provided, having a fluid dynamic bearing around its conical surface, and being connected to an axially parallel but radially displaced axially oriented journal style bearing. The combined effects of these bearings is sufficient to maintain or even enhance the overall stability of the system.

  • Patent number: 6505968
Abstract: A bearing assembly having a shaft member having a bearing race and a piezoelectric member opposing the bearing race is situated so that when a voltage is applied to it, it expands against the bearing race so that a preload of the bearing is varied. • Patent number: 6080352
Abstract: A brushless permanent-magnet direct current motor has a permanent magnet which is magnetized to create an offset angle between detent and mutual torques for providing sufficient starting torque for all relative orientations between the stator and the rotor of the motor. This is accomplished by providing a permanent magnet in which the global magnetization of the magnet has been disrupted by the application of a local magnetic field to a portion of the magnet, thereby to provide a magnetic anomaly in the global magnetization. Also, a method of magnetization of the magnet is described.

  • Patent number: 5659215
Abstract: A voice coil motor (VCM) for a small form factor hard disk drive having a contoured flux field in the air gap wherein adjoining regions of oppositely directed magnetic flux form a transition zone. In the preferred embodiment, the magnetic structure assembly is contoured or shaped. The magnetic structure assembly comprises pole pieces and magnets. The shaping may be of either of the pole pieces or of either of the magnets. The shaping may be along the top edge only, along the bottom edge only, or along both edges. Alternatively, the shaping may be accomplished in the transverse plane, that is by shaping the profile in thickness. The shaping can be done so that when the flux is falling in one gap it is rising in the other gap. In this manner, the sum of the flux in the two gaps remains the same.

  • Patent number: 5619389
Abstract: A spindle motor for rotating at least one disc in a data storage device includes a base, a shaft, a rotor and a stator. A bearing interconnects the rotor with the shaft and allows the rotor to rotate about the shaft. A resilient coupling, such as an O-ring, is compressed between the stator and the base to mechanically isolate the stator from the base and thereby reduce the generation of acoustic noise in the storage device.
