  • Patent number: 5033417
Abstract: The operation of a spark-ignition internal combustion engine of a vehicle, which is provided with an exhaust gas catalyst, with fuels of very different octane numbers is made possible without endangering the internal combustion engine and the exhaust gas catalyst owing to the fact that, when combustion with knocking occurs, at first the ignition angle is withdrawn up to a particular value, that is, the ignition timing is adjusted in the direction or retarded ignition, and then, in the event of further knocking, the suction pipe length is changed for the purpose of reducing the amount of fuel charged to the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4926634
Abstract: In producing a homogeneous exhaust gas mixture equal portions of the exhaust stream from one cylinder bank and the exhaust stream from a second cylinder bank are combined and then fed to two catalysts. A lambda probe to control the fuel-air ratio is disposed in the path leading to one of the catalysts.

  • Patent number: 4498435
Abstract: In an injection-type internal-combustion engine with an air suction passage 2 designed as a twist forming passage means, the edge 10 between a curved passage section 4 and the valve chamber 6 is formed by an elastically deformable hollow body 12 located in a cavity 11. The interior of the hollow body 12 is in communication with a pressure means source 15, 16, by means of which the pressure in the hollow space is varied in dependence upon operating parameters. When pressurized the hollow body extends out of the cavity and effects a constriction of the air stream passing through passage 2 whereby the twist is increased.

  • Patent number: 4359990
Abstract: A continuous fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine including a fuel metering valve 7 operating at a controlled pressure difference between chambers 13,14, the pressure difference being automatically adjusted by a regulating valve 17 including a diaphragm 18 separating two chambers 19,20. Chamber 20 is connected to relief 60 via a movable valve element 35 and the second chamber 19 is connected to the pressure upstream of the metering valve. The pressure difference is determined by a spring system acting on the diaphragm 18 including a stronger spring 33 which acts directly on the diaphragm and a weaker spring 34 which acts as a contact spring holding the valve body 35 lightly in contact with the diaphragm.

  • Patent number: 4304200
Abstract: A fuel injection system for a mixture-compressing spark-ignition internal combustion engine includes an air suction pipe, a throttle valve located in the pipe, and a member upstream of the throttle valve, which is actuatable by air flowing through the suction pipe so as to move a piston valve to dose a quantity of fuel to a fuel injection nozzle. The system includes a duct which bypasses the throttle valve, the duct having a valve which closes the duct when the throttle valve is closed and when the engine is above the idling speed. The duct valve is operatively connected to a switching member which switches off the ignition system of the engine.

  • Patent number: 4100911
Abstract: A rotary piston internal combustion engine of trochoidal construction with spark ignition and fuel injection, comprises a housing made up of a peripheral wall portion with a two-lobed inner surface having first and second nodes on its minor axis, and two parallel side portions. A three-cornered piston in the housing is rotatably mounted on the eccentric of an eccentric-carrying shaft, the piston having a recess in each flank and defining together with the inner peripheral surface of the housing working chambers of variable volume. Provisions are made in the housing near the first minor-axis node, an inlet port with a fuel metering device and an exhaust port for the escape of the burnt gases, and in which at least one sparking plug and an injection nozzle are arranged in the zone of the inner peripheral surface in which compression takes place.
