  • Patent number: 6524228
Abstract: A roller (100) for the pressure treatment of fabric webs includes a hollow cylinder (1), rotatable about its axis A and bearing the working roller periphery (4). A non-rotatable crosshead (5) extends through the hollow cylinder (1) along its length, leaving all around a distance with respect to the inner circumference (2) of the hollow cylinder (1). The cylinder (1) is supported at the ends on external support pieces. A support device (10) is arranged on the crosshead (5) and acts radially in the active plane (W) of the roller (100) against the inner circumference (2) of the hollow cylinder (1). The support device transmits from the crosshead (5) to the hollow cylinder (1) the forces that are necessary for creating the line forces exerted by the roller (100). Provided laterally on the crosshead (5) is a hydrostatic support element (30) acting radially perpendicular to the active plane (W) of the roller (100) against the inner circumference (2) of the hollow cylinder (1).

  • Patent number: 6045492
Abstract: A roller is provided for a pressure treatment of a web of paper, textile, plastic film, and is composed of a rotary hollow cylinder which can be distinctly deformed under the effect of line forces in the roll nip. The roller includes a non-rotary cross-head which penetrates the rotary hollow cylinder over its length. On the side of the roll nip, hydraulic supporting elements are provided which can be pressed against the inside circumference of the hollow cylinder in the manner of piston/cylinder units. These supporting elements have a length of not more than 20 cm in the longitudinal direction of the cross-head, and are closely arranged next to one another in the longitudinal direction of the cross-head. The supporting elements can be driven independently of one another at least in several groups. A sealing strip is also provided which continues in one piece over several supporting elements.

  • Patent number: 5119542
Abstract: In a hydraulically supported roll including a rotatable hollow cylinder and a stationary crosshead, transverse end seals are provided to seal the annular clearance space formed between the crosshead and the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder. Each transverse end seal includes a slide ring having a chamber located on the first surface of the slide ring abutting a counter-ring. The chamber provides hydraulic relief. Radially outside of the chamber a narrow groove is provided which communicates with the low-pressure side of the slide ring via a channel. The channel discharges hydraulic fluid flowing to the first surface of the slide ring as a result of the high pressure in the clearance space.

  • Patent number: 5024150
Abstract: To reduce vibrations occurring in sets of rolls that are immediately successive along the direction of travel of a web conducted through the nips formed between the roll sets, a process, especially for use in double calendars used to treat paper webs, is disclosed in which the natural frequency of one set of rolls is altered with respect to the natural frequency of the other set of rolls. In this manner, randomly occurring vibrations in the first set of rolls do not produce a resonance excitation of the second set of rolls. A roll apparatus having reduced vibratory tendencies also is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4984343
Abstract: A sealing element for a hydrostatically supported roll having bending control is disclosed in which a row of sealing elements is provided in a stationary crosshead for supporting a rotatable hollow cylinder arranged around the crosshead. Each of the sealing elements has a contact surface, including an enclosed circular rim, for abutting the inner circumference of the hollow cylinder. First ducts having a large cross sectional area are connected with a fluid supply line for supplying hydraulic fluid to a hydrostatic pressure chamber formed inside the rim. A cylinder volume is formed in the sealing element between the end of a longitudinal bore in the sealing element and a piston, which includes a central passageway connected with a second, separate fluid supply line. The piston is fixedly mounted to the crosshead and arranged in the cylinder volume.

  • Patent number: 4916748
Abstract: A support element for a hydrostatically supported roll comprises a contact surface that is formed from segments, which define the boundaries of supply pockets formed in the contact surface. The total extent of the segments in the circumferential direction of the hollow cylinder is constant over the length of the support element along the longitudinal direction of the roll.

  • Patent number: 4902384
Abstract: A wet press of a paper-making machine includes a pair of rolls defining a roll gap through which the paper to be treated and belt-shaped felt are simultaneously conducted. The felt is guided in a closed loop path by additional rolls which include a tightening roll. The tightening roll can be tilted to reduce roll vibrations by tightening the felt to set vibratory marks formed in the felt at an angle relative to the transverse width of the felt and the roll gap. A controllable positioning device is provided which includes a motor operated by a controller during predetermined time intervals or as a function of actual vibrations sensed at the pair of rolls forming the roll gap to automatically vary the tilt angle.

  • Patent number: 4877331
Abstract: A temperature measuring device for a rotating roll comprises a housing with guide rollers around which a belt is looped and held under tension by an idler roll. One boundary of the housing is arched concavely in accordance with typical roll diameters to enable the blet to run freely in this region outside the housing and press against a roll surface in a looping region to drive the belt as the roll rotates. The inner side of the belt facing away from the roll may be blackened and the energy radiated therefrom may be measured by a radiation pyrometer to determine the temperature of the roll.

  • Patent number: 4735073
Abstract: A roll for treating a web of material includes a hollow roll supported for rotation about a stationary cross piece. Between the inside circumference of the hollow roll and the cross piece, a longitudinal chamber filled with temperature-controlled pressure liquid is provided, in which a lengthwise subdivision is arranged so that the flow of the pressure liquid in the two partial longitudinal chambers is in opposite directions in order to obtain a uniform temperature distribution along the roll.
