    Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for internetworking WWAN and WLAN are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system, and apparatus for a mobile station to sense and select a WLAN or a WWAN are disclosed. A mobile station may communicate according to an 802.xx wireless local area network air interface protocol via WLAN logic or according to a wireless wide area network air interface protocol via WWAN logic. The mobile station detects RF energy in the 802.xx spectrum and, in response to the energy detection, determines whether there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station by performing a scanning operation. If there is an 802.xx WLAN capable of servicing the mobile station, the mobile station selects the WLAN logic so that it may communicate via an air interface. Under some embodiments, WWAN has information identifying the areas in which capable WLANs operate and the WWAN provisions the mobile station with at least a subset of such information.

    Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for internetworking a WWAN and a WLAN are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system and apparatus for providing WWAN services to a mobile station serviced by a WLAN are disclosed. An MSC is provisioned to serve a WLAN. The MSC that serves the WLAN receives WWAN messages that provide a WWAN service. The MSC forms SIP messages using the received WWAN messages and delivers the SIP messages to the WLAN via an IP link. The WLAN delivers the SIP messages to the mobile station via a WLAN air interface protocol. Under one embodiment, the WWAN service is a Short Message Service (SMS). Under another embodiment, the WWAN service is a Message Wait Notification (MWN). Under another embodiment, an MSC that services the WLAN and an MSC servicing the WWAN cooperate to provide TFO call services between an mobile station operating in the WLAN and a mobile station operating in the WWAN.

    Abstract: A method, system and apparatus for internetworking a mobile station to operate in a WWAN environment and in a WLAN environment are disclosed. More specifically, a method, system and apparatus for internetworking a mobile station to operate in a WWAN environment and in a WLAN environment with PBX services are disclosed. A switch is provisioned to communicate with a WLAN via IP communication and to communicate with a PBX via a PBX interface. The switch receives mobile station communications via the WLAN. The switch converts the mobile station communications to a format compatible with the PBX interface and forwards the converted communications to the PBX. The PBX receives and handles the converted communications. Under one embodiment, the switch is further provisioned to communicate with a WWAN and the switch analyzes the mobile station communications and determines that the communications address an entity external to a domain of the PBX. In response, the switch requests a TLDN from a MSC serving the WWAN.
