Patent number: 8468284Abstract: One or more message signaled interruption requests from one or more input/output (I/O) adapters are converted to I/O adapter event notifications while retaining the message vector indication. An I/O adapter event notification may be routed and presented to a host or to a guest that the host is executing. To present the notification to the correct host or to the correct guest, various data structures in host and/or guest memory are used.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2010Date of Patent: June 18, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Frank W. Patent number: 8387049Abstract: Processing within a computing environment that supports pageable guests is facilitated. Processing is facilitated in many ways, including, but not limited to, associating guest and host state information with guest blocks of storage; maintaining the state information in control blocks in host memory; enabling the changing of states; and using the state information in management decisions. In one particular example, the guest state includes an indication of usefulness and importance of memory contents to the guest, and the host state reflects the ease of access to memory contents. The host and guest state information is used in managing memory of the host and/or guests.Type: GrantFiled: July 15, 2005Date of Patent: February 26, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ingo Adlung, Hubertus Franke, Lisa C. Publication number: 20110320664Abstract: The conditions under which adapter interruptions are made pending are controlled. Responsive to an interruption being presented to an operating system, subsequent interruptions are suppressed on all central processing units in the configuration. The operating system processes the interruption, including examining and processing indicators of reported events until the operating system discontinues the suppression. This enables the operating system to control the number of pending interruptions and the number of processors processing those interruptions.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2010Publication date: December 29, 2011Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Brenton F. Publication number: 20110321158Abstract: An authorization mechanism allows a host executing a guest operating system to grant permission for the guest to directly access an adapter function's address spaces without host intervention. This access is via instructions implemented based on the architecture of the adapter function. The host also has the capability to intervene in the execution of the instruction, if desired.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2010Publication date: December 29, 2011Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: David Craddock, Mark S. Patent number: 8055817Abstract: Computer program products and methods for efficient handling of queued-direct input/output (QDIO) requests and completions at an adapter in communication with an I/O device are provided. A method includes accessing a queue with one or more storage block address lists (SBALs), where each SBAL includes a plurality of storage block address list entries (SBALEs) and is associated with an SLSB. The method further includes reading an SBAL count in one of the SBALEs, where the SBAL count indicates a number of the SBALs forming an I/O request to the I/O device. In response to determining that the SBAL count is greater than one, a number of the SBALs from the queue and associated SLSBs equivalent to the SBAL count are prefetched without waiting for a notification of completion of each of the SBALs forming the I/O request, and states of the associated SLSBs transition from adapter-owned to program-owned.Type: GrantFiled: October 30, 2009Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Raymond Higgs, George P.
