Patent number: 10628330Abstract: A method is described for enabling inter-process communication between a first application and a second application, the first application running within a first virtual machine (VM) in a host and the second application running within a second VM in the host, The method includes receiving a request to attach a shared region of memory to a memory allocation, identifying a list of one or more physical memory pages defining the shared region that corresponds to the handle, and mapping guest memory pages corresponding to the allocation to the physical memory pages. The request may be received by a framework from the second application and includes a handle that uniquely identifies the shared region of memory as well as an identification of at least one guest memory page corresponding to the memory allocation.Type: GrantFiled: April 6, 2018Date of Patent: April 21, 2020Assignee: VMware, Inc.Inventors: Gustav Seth Wibling, Jagannath Gopal Krishnan

Patent number: 9384023Abstract: A method for enabling inter-process communication between a first application and a second application, the first application running within a first context and the second application running within a second context of a virtualization system is described. The method includes receiving a request to attach a shared region of memory to a memory allocation, identifying a list of one or more physical memory pages defining the shared region that corresponds to the handle, and mapping guest memory pages corresponding to the allocation to the physical memory pages. The request is received by a framework from the second application and includes a handle that uniquely identifies the shared region of memory as well as an identification of at least one guest memory page corresponding to the memory allocation. The framework is a component of a virtualization software, which executes in a context distinct from the context of the first application.Type: GrantFiled: August 22, 2013Date of Patent: July 5, 2016Assignee: VMware, Inc.Inventors: Gustav Seth Wibling, Jagannath Gopal Krishnan

Patent number: 8281318Abstract: A method of data communication between a first virtual machine and a second virtual machine is disclosed. The second virtual machine is executing in a record/replay mode. Data from the first virtual machine is copied to a first queue. The first queue receives the data from the first virtual machine. The first queue has a header section and a data section, wherein the header section being write protected and stores a tail pointer of the data in the first queue. The tail pointer is updated in the header section. This update of the tail pointer causes a page fault, which is handled-through a page fault handler. The handling includes copying the data from the first queue to a second queue. The second queue being configured to receive a copy of the data and to allow the second virtual machine to access the copy of the data.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2008Date of Patent: October 2, 2012Assignee: VMware, Inc.Inventors: Anupam Chanda, Kevin Scott Christopher, Jeremy Sugerman, Petr Vandrovec, Gustav Seth Wibling
