    Abstract: A method for treating effluent water containing suspended oil from a gravity separator, which method comprises passing the effluent through a sand filter so as to remove suspended oil and produce water suitable for effective passage through a biological percolating filter; periodically stopping the flow of effluent water through the sand filter before suspended oil can pass; and backwashing the sand filter with water to remove suspended oil therefrom.
