  • Patent number: 7234324
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for controlling systems of cryogenic centrifugal compressors. A predetermined curve in the form of a first parameter as a function of a second parameter is selected. The first parameter represents the rotational speed of a compressor, and the second parameter represents the mass for rate of that compressor. The speed of rotation of a downstream compressor is regulated according to the value of the suction pressure of an upstream compressor and a variable set pressure. The variable set pressure is regulated according to both actual value of the first parameter for a downstream compressor, and the theoretical value of this parameter. The theoretical value is determined from a predetermine curve using the value of the second parameter.

  • Publication number: 20050178134
Abstract: The inventive method consists in: selecting a pre-determined curve (C?OPT), which can be represented in the form of a first parameter (NU) that is representative of the speed of rotation of a compressor, according to a second parameter (X) that is representative of the mass flow of said compressor; regulating the speed of rotation of the downstream compressor according to the relative values of the instantaneous suction pressure of the upstream compressor and of a variable set pressure; and regulating the variable set pressure according to the instantaneous value (NU4(inst)), for the downstream compressor, of the parameter that is representative of the speed of rotation and the theoretical value (NU4(th)) of said first parameter, which is located on the pre-determined curve (COPT), which corresponds to the instantaneous value (X4(inst)) of the second parameter representative of the mass flow.

  • Patent number: 6170290
Abstract: In this process, the fluid is compressed (at 2) in the gaseous state to a pressure called the high pressure, the fluid is precooled on passing through a precooling first stage (3), cooled and liquefied, at least partially, on passing through a cooling second stage (4), at least some of the cooled and expanded fluid is collected in a tank (5) for storing the fluid in a two-phase state and some of the gas phase is sent back via a warming line (7) from the tank through the first and second stages. The precooled fluid is divided into at least two separate streams which are expanded in parallel in the second stage, mainly a first stream intended to supply, at least partly, a first source of refrigeration (at 8), and at least a second stream, one of these streams being partially liquefied separately (at 27) on passing through the second stage (4). The process is applicable to the cooling of superconducting components using helium.

  • Patent number: 5941095
Abstract: A process for the compression of helium at low temperature and low pressure, and a compression line and refrigeration unit corresponding thereto. A plurality of centrifugal compressors (C.sub.1 to C.sub.4) in series are so dimensioned as to supply nominal compression loads .tau..sub.1N, . . . .tau..sub.nN for same nominal mass flow rate D.sub.N. A (n+1)th centrifugal compressor (C.sub.5) is dimensioned for a nominal compression load substantially equal to .tau..sub.1N for a decreased mass flow rate D.sub.D is less than D.sub.N of the precompressed gas at a pressure P.sub.0 multiplied by .tau..sub.2N .times. . . . .times..tau..sub.nN. This extra compressor is placed in series upstream of the n centrifugal compressors. The (n+1)th compressor is adjusted such that the compressors of rows 2 to n ensure substantially constant compression loads that are equal respectively to .tau..sub.2N, . . . , .tau..sub.nN, and the compressors of rows 1 and (n+1) ensure compression loads .tau..sub.1 and .tau..sub.

  • Patent number: 5829269
Abstract: Method of reliquefying gaseous helium produced when transferring liquid helium from a donor container (R1) to a receiver container (R2), characterized in that a stream of gaseous helium is bled off from a point in a compression unit (10) intended for charging with gaseous helium under pressure, this stream of gaseous helium is cooled by heat exchange with the gaseous helium intended for the compression unit (10) and the compressed gaseous helium thus cooled is expanded in order to obtain reliquefied helium.

  • Patent number: 5499505
Abstract: The recompression line for the gas in the cold container (7) comprises at least one compressor (C) with which at least a first means (N.sub.1) for controlling the speed of rotation of the compressor as a function of parameters (inter alia, flow rate (D), pressure (P)) of the fluid in the line (8) is associated. In order to ensure an adequate fluid flow rate at the inlet of the compressor, the installation comprises a line (9) comprising a pilot-operated valve (V.sub.1) and by-passing the compressor, and a line (10) comprising a pilot-operated valve (V.sub.2) connecting the inlet line (4) to the compression line (8).Used, inter alia, in installations for refrigerating superconductive elements.

  • Patent number: 5265426
Abstract: The compression circuit for a gaseous fluid, typically helium, which is present in a first container at a pressure lower than 20 hPa and a temperature lower than 4.2K is compressed by means of a plurality of compressors mounted in series, at least one heat exchanger being disposed in the chain of compressors and cooled through said fluid at a temperature higher than the temperature of the fluid in the first container, said fluid originating from a second fluid container which is associated with a refrigerating cycle. Application for example to devices for cooling supraconductor elements.
