    Abstract: The invention relates to novel polyurethane prepolymer compositions, methods of preparing the compositions, and methods of applying the compositions in a single step, e.g., one pour, to form a foamed base mat as a multi-use surface. The two-component system of the invention includes reacting diisocyanate selected from toluene diisocyanate, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof, and polyol selected from diol, triol, quadrol and mixtures thereof, to form a polyurethane prepolymer component and reacting this component with aqueous sodium silicate.

    Abstract: A direct and simple method to control cell size in a polyurethane foam is disclosed. Polyurethane foam is made by mixing prepolymer with foam-forming ingredients comprising isocyanate and water which react to give carbon dioxide. The reaction is driven by a catalyst and results in a foam structure with cells of a particular size. Using the addition of a pre-determined amount of mineral oil, the coalescence of neighboring cells of the foam structure may be advantageously controlled to form a cell structure with a desired average cell size.

    Abstract: The selectivity of an olefin epoxidation process catalyzed by titanium silicalite is improved by performing the epoxidation in the presence of minor amounts of nonbasic salts such as lithium chloride, sodium nitrate, potassium sulfate, and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate. For example, when hydrogen peroxide is reacted with propylene to form propylene oxide, non-selective ring-opening reactions of the propylene oxide are suppressed when low concentrations of a nonbasic salt are added to the hydrogen peroxide feed.

    Abstract: In an epoxidation process wherein an olefin is reacted with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a titanium-containing molecular sieve catalyst and a salt, the tendency of the catalyst to produce greater quantities of oxygen as it ages due to non-selective decomposition of the hydrogen peroxide may be counteracted by the addition of a chelating agent bearing hydroxyl, carboxyl, amino, and/or phosphoryl groups. The use of such a chelating agent enables selectivity to epoxide to be maintained at a desirably high level for a prolonged period of time in a continuous epoxidation unit.
