  • Patent number: 4746129
Abstract: An expansion joint strip seal for use in roadways, bridges, buildings and the like to seal across a gap defined by a pair of parallel, elongated edge or frame members, which have generally C-shaped cavities opening towards the gap for purposes of supporting opposite lengthwise extending edges of the strip seal. The strip seal is formed of a suitable resiliently deformable material and defined by a web portion sized to span the gap and a pair of mounting bead portions joined to opposite edges of the web portion and adapted for insertion within the cavities of the edge members. Each mounting bead portion includes a solid or non-apertured main mounting portion, which is joined to the web portion and provided with a height essentially corresponding to the height of the cavity and a width less than the width of the cavity; and a tongue portion cantilever supported by the main mounting portion to project in a direction away from the web portion.

  • Patent number: 4437785
Abstract: An elastomeric seal member for sealing roadway and structural expansion joints. The seal member is of generally rectangular configuration and includes top, bottom, and side walls, the side walls being linear and the top and bottom walls including means to cause deflection thereof to occur in a downward direction. Internal support members include right and left spaced apart struts, upper and lower spaced apart ribs, and corner trusses. The struts extend from the top wall to the bottom wall, each strut including generally straight upper and lower portions, the spacing between the upper ends of the upper portions either being the same or slightly greater than the spacing between the lower ends of the upper portions, and the lower portions of the struts extending downwardly and outwardly from the upper portions. The upper and lower ribs are positioned between the top and bottom walls and extend transversely from one of the side walls to the other side wall.

  • Patent number: 4378176
Abstract: A deflector comprising a stem portion and a deflecting body portion for protecting a roadway expansion joint. The stem portion anchors the deflector in an operating position in which the body portion deflects snow plow blades and the like upwardly away from the expansion joint.

  • Patent number: 4362429
Abstract: An improved retainer for an expansion joint system and a sealing cap for the anchor bolt channel thereof. The retainer channel and the cap have complementary mating profiles in the form of ledges with inclined edges and inwardly offset grooves having sloped bottom surfaces on the retainer channel walls, the cap having laterally projecting upper edge portions defining ledge receiving grooves and sloped bottom edge surfaces whereby entry of the cap into the retainer channel is facilitated by coaction between the sloped bottom surfaces of the cap and the inclined edges of the retainer ledges. The retainer ledges mate with the cap grooves to lock the cap in the retainer. The sloped bottom surfaces of the cap are supported by the sloped bottom surfaces of the retainer grooves and the laterally projecting upper edge portions of the cap are supported by the upper surfaces of the retainer ledges, the surfaces being in sealing engagement.

  • Patent number: 4339214
Abstract: A composite expansion joint assembly having a pair of edge members, a plurality of elongated resiliently yieldable sealing elements, rigid structural members interposed between adjacent sealing elements and laterally spaced support bars for the structural members. Equalizing springs acting directly upon the structural members independently of the support bars are compressed by movement of the structural members away from each other and from the edge members as the sealing members open, providing equalizing forces to maintain equidistant spacing between the structural members whether they are laterally slidable on the support bars in a single support bar system or are fixed to the support bars in a multiple support bar system.

  • Patent number: 4179226
Abstract: An expansion joint seal for use in roadways, bridges and the like adapted for use with a pair of elongated, parallel spaced-apart edge members defining a gap therebetween and each of the edge members having a generally C-shaped cavity opening towards said gap. The seal includes mounting beads on each of its longitudinal edges for reception within the aforesaid edge member cavities and a double walled, resilient web construction spanning the aforesaid gap and being attached to the mounting beads. The double walls of the web are disposed in an upper and lower relative relationship to one another and are connected to the mounting beads at correspondindly upper and lower portions thereon. The upper and lower web walls fold downwardly upon movement of the edge members towards one another and corresponding reduction in width of the gap.

  • Patent number: 4148167
Abstract: An expansion joint seal for use preferably in walkways and the like having a pair of elongated, parallel spaced-apart slab members defining a gap therebetween with each of the slab members having a generally C-shaped cavity opening toward said gap. The seal includes mounting beads on each of its longitudinal edges for assembly within the aforesaid slab cavities and an intermediate section spanning the aforesaid gap and being attached to the mounting beads. Each mounting bead is of tubular construction and includes an outer wall surface configuration generally adapted for matching engagement with said cavity. The radius of curvature of each mounting bead outer wall portion in an unstressed, disassembled condition is less than the radius of curvature of the corresponding cavity so that upon assembly of the mounting bead within the cavity the outer wall portion is forced to assume the curvature of the cavity resulting in a highly effective mounting of the bead.

  • Patent number: 4140419
Abstract: Two concrete slabs separated by a gap are interconnected by a molded expansion joint formed by a pair of composite marginal bodies formed of metal and elastomeric material which are disposed on opposite sides of the gap. Each marginal body includes a groove with an aperture which is open in the direction of the gap. An elastomeric sealing means is disposed to span the gap and be received through the marginal body apertures for mounting in the grooves thereof wherein each marginal body includes a metal mounting plate embedded in the elastomeric material thereof which overlies the groove associated therewith. Anchor means secure each of the marginal bodies against the slabs whereby the mounting plates therein reinforceably urge the longitudinal edges of the sealing means into a firm engagement against the slabs.

  • Patent number: 4075728
Abstract: A composite expansion joint assembly of alternating elastic sealing elements and rigid structural members mounted on transversely extending support bars by mounting means restricting vertical and horizontal translational displacement of the structural members. The mounting means comprises two embossments disposed between a structural member and support bar with a pinned connection extending between the embossments so as to allow relative rotational movement between the structural member and support bar. Each support bar has mounted thereon only one structural member with each structural member being supported at each of its ends.

  • Patent number: 4018539
Abstract: A modular expansion seal for use in roadways, bridges, and the like adapted for use with a pair of elongated, parallel, spaced-apart retaining members defining a gap therebetween and each of the retaining members having a generally C-shaped cavity opening towards said gap. The seal includes end walls for mounting within the aforesaid retaining member cavities and top and bottom walls extending between the end walls for spanning the aforesaid gap. Each end wall includes an outer surface configuration generally adapted for matching engagement with said cavity. However, the radius of curvature of the end wall in an unstressed, disassembled condition is less than the radius of curvature of the cavity so that upon assembly of the end wall within the cavity the outer curved wall position is forced to assume the curvature of the cavity resulting in a highly effective mounting of the end wall therein.
