  • Patent number: 9867044
Abstract: A system and method is described that enables autonomic discovery of wireless network security mechanisms by mobile devices. Stateful monitoring of wireless devices facilitates identification of pending network connectivity loss, enabling a handoff server to proactively advertise new points of access and their associated security mechanisms to devices before connectivity is lost. As a result, devices may seamlessly transition between secure networks. Stateful monitoring of device reachability may be used together with device certificates and/or tokens to decrease the potential of MAC spoofing and further secure the network. Stateful monitoring of device connectivity status during network transitions facilitates the identification of rogue access points. The token or certificate on the device may be used to authenticate the device while transitioning between networks by a centralized entity, managing the initiation and the execution of the handover for the device.

  • Patent number: 9019963
Abstract: Frame contained destination information may be used by a switch to identify an appropriate output port for a given frame without performing a table access operation. This reduces the processing requirements of the switch to enable the switch to handle frames more efficiently. The frame contained destination information may be contained in the frame's local destination MAC addresses (DA) such that a portion of the DA directly indicates, for each switch that handles the frame, an output port for that switch. Different portions of the DA may be used by different switches, depending on where they are in the network hierarchy. Large switches may also use sub-fields within their allocated portion in the DA to identify internal switching components. A location resolution server may be provided to store and distribute IP and MAC addresses and respond to local ARP requests on the local domain.

  • Publication number: 20080159233
Abstract: A method and apparatus that enables a mobile device to seamlessly transition between packet-switched wireless networks to while maintaining access to a resource is described. The invention includes a delay measurement component, a buffer management component and a mobile device component. The delay measurement component actively measures downlink packet delays from a packet duplication point to each of the interfaces of the mobile device with a single time reference. A buffer management component compares the measured delays to identify a delay difference and uses the delay difference to manage packet delivery on each network during the transition. A mobile device component includes functionality for assisting in the delay measurement and organizing packets received during transition. As a result of the above mechanisms, delay measurement and buffer management, “slips” and “repeats” due to network transition are minimized, which guarantees an enhanced Quality of Experience (QoE).

  • Patent number: 7394808
Abstract: Device-wide performance guarantees may be implemented in a network element using a pull forwarding scheme by using separate processes on the network element communicating via handshake signals to enable coordination between the aspects of the network element. One class of processes execute at the ingress queues, a second class of process execut at junction points, and a final class of processes execute at the egress ports. The combination of these separate processes leads to the correct scheduling of frames in a device-wide manner as if there were a centralized scheduler with complete information about all queued frames. As a result, the performance guarantees of the intended scheduling algorithm are preserved and are provided in a device-wide manner. The scheduling algorithms that are supported include round-robin, deficit round robin, negative deficit round robin, weighted round robin, and strict priority.

  • Publication number: 20080096560
Abstract: This invention provides a system, method and apparatus for facilitating handoffs from a first communication network to a second communication network, the first communication network and second communication network being heterogeneous with respect to each other. The system, method and apparatus may further include a contextual information server, which stores contextual elements corresponding to a user device and the operating environment of the user device, and a handoff decision function module that evaluates at least one of the contextual elements to determine whether to handoff user device communications from the first communication network to the second communication network.
