  • Patent number: 6167031
Abstract: A communication system that supports multiple modulation and channel coding schemes selects an optimum RF link by measuring link quality parameters, such as C/I ratio. All of the available RF links are characterized based on the measured link quality parameters by calculating mean values and variances of the parameters. Based on the characterization of the RF link, user quality values, such as user data throughput and speech quality values, are estimated. The communication system selects the RF link that provides the best user quality value.

  • Patent number: 6157627
Abstract: A method and system for allocating and reallocating communication channel resources in a resource area defined by a number of communication channels. According to the method, arrival probabilities for various types of channel structures are estimated and used as the basis of the allocation and reallocation. Priorities are assigned to the various types of channel structures, and a priority list is disclosed which can be consulted to perform the allocation and reallocation. Preferably, an allocation and a reallocation are performed for each arrival of a channel structure to the resource area, and a reallocation is performed after each departure of a channel structure from the resource area.

  • Patent number: 6134230
Abstract: In a communication system, a link protocol for a transparent data between a mobile station and a base station is selected by pre-selecting from all possible combinations of available link protocols a set of pre-selected combinations of link protocols based on a predefined service requirement and at least one basic capability of the mobile or base stations. Then, the link protocol is selected from the pre-selected combinations of link protocols based on measurements of one or more link quality parameters and at least one variable restriction caused by instantaneous conditions in the communication system.

  • Patent number: 6006075
Abstract: A transmitter diversity assembly and an associated method for a radio transmitter. When coupled to a radio transmitter to form a portion thereof, signal diversity is created to overcome multi-path fading. A plurality of antennas are freely selectable to be coupled to receive bursts of a communication signal, modulated to be transmitted on any of selected carriers. By altering the carriers upon which the bursts of the communication signal are transmitted and the spatially-separated antennas used to transduce the bursts of the communication signal, both transmission space diversity and frequency diversity is created.

  • Patent number: 5920818
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, controls operation of a mobile terminal operable in a communication system having two network portions. Selective permission of cell selection of communications between the two network portions better assures that the mobile terminal, when positioned in an area intended to be encompassed by one of the network portions, communicates with that network portion.

  • Patent number: 5854981
Abstract: A method and apparatus for adaptively reconfiguring a neighbor cell list. For a selected cell of a cellular system, data associated with the selected cell and each of a plurality of neighboring base stations is collected. The collected data includes data on events indicative of the quality of handoffs from the selected cell to each of the neighboring base stations. The collected data also includes signal level measurements made on measurement channels of the neighboring base stations. A plurality of quality values, each associated with the selected cell and one of the neighboring cells, are then determined from the collected data. A neighbor cell list is then generated for the selected cell by determining the highest quality values, and placing the handoff measurement channels of the neighboring cells associated with the highest quality values in the neighbor cell list.
