Cells and non-human transgenic animals comprising at least one mutant monamine oxidase gene, and purified mutant monamine oxidase protein are also provided. The genes, cells and proteins of the invention are useful in the and therapeutic and diagnostic methods provided which relate to treating and diagnosing individuals having a mutant monamine oxidase gene and exhibiting an associated abnormal behavior.
