  • Publication number: 20170014554
Abstract: A medical suction system and method of use is disclosed. The system may include a tube and a collection container. A distal portion of the tube may have a plurality of apertures that are disposed within the patient of an opening adjacent to an incision at a surgical site. A proximal portion of the tube extends out of the opening and is connected to the collection container. The opening is sealed around the tube so as to form a closed system with the collection container. The collection container may be resilient and form a vacuum by compressing by allowing the collection container to decompress. The collection container may also be provided to the user pre-compressed by rolling up the collection container and placing a band or wrapper around the compressed collection container. Alternatively, the collection container may be provided in the uncompressed state. Anchor tabs are used to secure the tube so that the plurality of apertures remain within the patient.

  • Publication number: 20150352268
Abstract: A portable, adjustable disposable medical suction system and method of use is disclosed. The system includes a delivery device to provide a conduit from a surgical site on a patient to the portable, adjustable medical suction system. The suction system may be a battery powered vacuum pump with one or more different adjustments directed to a strength of the vacuum, duration of the vacuum and interval between suction. The delivery device may be an intranasal tampon device or a tube inserted into the surgical site. During surgery and recovery at a surgical center or hospital, the vacuum source attached to the delivery system may be an industrial type vacuum source. Upon discharge, the suction system can be connected to the delivery system so that bleeding can be resolved by the patient in the comfort of his/her own home. The system and method of use is safer and mitigates body fluid borne contamination.

  • Publication number: 20030086825
Abstract: An airborne contaminant indicating device adapted for attachment to a person's nose for indicating the presence of a contaminant entrained in an air stream passing through the nose. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the device is a clip with a proximal “UU” shaped dilating portion adapted to be inserted within the nostrils; the “U's” being connected to one another medially by an elastically deformable extension portion, the extension portion being two straight parallel strips, one end of the strips being integral with the dilating portion and the opposing end of the strip integral with an arcuate septum attachment portion. The septum attachment portion spaces the distal ends of the strips of the extension portion so that the strips straddle and gently squeeze the nasal septum. The device has a contaminant-interactive coated surface in contact with a portion of the air passing through the nose. The design of the embodiment provides maximum air flow through the nostrils.

  • Patent number: 5931852
Abstract: A device for establishing and maintaining an airway through the nasal passages. The device is a clip of unitary construction with a proximal "UU" shaped dilating portion adapted to be inserted within the nostrils; the "U's" being connected to one another medially by an elastically deformable extension portion, the extension portion being two straight parallel strips, one end of the strips being integral with the dilating portion and the opposing end of the strip integral with an arcuate septum attachment portion. The septum attachment portion spaces the distal ends of the strips of the extension portion so that the strips straddle and gently squeeze the nasal septum. The device provides maximum air flow through the nostrils. The device is attached to the nose by means of the distal elastically deformable septum attachment portion which is adapted to anatomically conform to and releasably engage the inferior margin of the nasal septum.

  • Patent number: 5514179
Abstract: A modular prosthesis for implantation beneath the skin is described. The modular prosthesis comprises a universal shell, which is relatively thin and substantially planar, having the general size and shape required for the prosthesis. The prosthesis is a composite structure consisting of the universal shell and one or more shims. The shims are individually cut from a shim sheet of a biocompatible material of suitable thickness. The shim sheet has a shell-contacting surface with means thereon for attaching the shim to the shell. The shims are cut from the shim sheet and attached to the shell to construct a prosthesis providing the desired contour to the overlying tissue following implantation. In a preferred embodiment, the universal shell and the shims have releasable interlocking means therebetween which permits changing the shims or adding shims to the prosthesis as required.

  • Patent number: 5011474
Abstract: A method of controlling nasal hemorrhaging during a nasal procedure without exerting direct pressure on the area of bleeding utilizes a nasal tampon having an expansible sealing cuff. The tampon is inserted into the nasal cavity through the anterior nares until the expansible sealing cuff is disposed beyond the choanae. The expansible sealing cuff is the inflated, and the tampon slightly withdrawn into the nasal cavity so as to wedge the cuff between the choanae and the nasopharyngeal passageway and occlude the choanae. The tampon may also be adapted for connection to a source of suction so as to rapidly and continuously expel fluids from the nasal cavity.

  • Patent number: 4994084
Abstract: A homograft implant is made from prepackaged, processed homograft material. The homograft material is taken in its purchased dehydrated form and cut into strips of varying shapes and sized. The strips are then adhesively secured together in a laminar manner by a tissue adhesive to form the desired shape and density of the implant. Once the implant has been made, it may then be surgically implanted in a desired location, immediately beneath the patient's dermis so as to alter the exterior appearance of the patient at the implant site. Since the implant is formed of dehydrated homograft material, endogenous tissue readily attaches to the implant after a short period of time, so that the implant becomes integral with the body.

  • Patent number: 4950280
Abstract: An improved nasal tampon for controlling and arresting hemorrhaging comprises an absorptive member, shaped to fit the gross contours of the nasal fossa, which is easily inserted in and removable from the nasal cavity. Affixed to one end of the tampon is a length of cord, having a weighted member appended thereto. The weighted member serves as a counter balance to aid in maintaining the tampon in place so as not to interfere with normal respiration through the mouth. In an alternative embodiment, the tampon is equipped with a drainage conduit, connected to a source of suction, so as to aspirate blood from the nasal cavity. In a further alternative embodiment, a breathing conduit is provided to enable the patient to breathe through the nose when the device is operatively inserted.

  • Patent number: 4883465
Abstract: A nasal tampon, adapted for use during a nasal surgery comprises an expansible low pressure sealing cuff, an inflation conduit, a drainage conduit, and an absorptive member. The tampon is designed to control nasal hemorrhaging without exerting direct pressure on the bleeding area. The expansible cuff conforms to the inner walls of the choanae and forming a seal therebetween so as to occlude the passageway and thereby prevent the flow of blood and other fluids down the patient's throat.

  • Patent number: 4190054
Abstract: A removable bandage attachable to a body part for entirely covering same, the bandage being made from an elastic material so as to hold the flesh of the body part firmly in place following surgery, a plurality of Velcro strips positioned on the outside surface of the bandage, a flexible fluid retaining envelope having a fluid therein which is heatable or coolable so that the envelope functions as a hot or cold pack, complementary Velcro strips on one side of the envelope to permit attachment of the envelope to the bandage without moving the bandage out of contact with the body part, and a layer of insulating material covering the outside of the envelope for reducing heat loss therefrom.
