Patent number: 7155067Abstract: The present invention improves image quality by detecting and enhancing edges in an image. Images often include blurry or fuzzy edges that can obscure an image. An edge is a portion of an image separating two regions of substantially constant image intensity. An image can be examined on a pixel-by-pixel basis to find a candidate edge. When a candidate edge is found, a determination can made as to whether the candidate edge is a true edge. A true edge can be enhanced by amplifying the image intensity differences between pixels on the true edge and adjacent pixels not on the true edge. The present invention also provides a novel image processing filter for eliminating well-known noise from an image. The image processing filter can further improve edge enhancement by eliminating such noise prior to the edge detection and enhancement.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 2001Date of Patent: December 26, 2006Assignee: EG Technology, Inc.Inventors: Nuggehally S. Publication number: 20020028024Abstract: A method and system can automatically select the optimal size of a visual object that can be displayed on an display device. For example, the present invention can determine the best or optimum size to display a visual object received from a computer network to a computer screen such that image degradations due to compression or transmission defects are less noticeable or perceivable. Typically, the best or optimum size to display a visual object can comprise a size that is also the maximum in which the visual object can be displayed without any degradations or defects.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2001Publication date: March 7, 2002Applicant: MediaFlow LLCInventors: Nuggehally S. Publication number: 20020021756Abstract: The present invention provides video signal compression that efficiently groups pictures in a video stream into variably-sized groups of pictures (GOPs), thereby providing lower achievable output signal bit rates and higher output signal quality. The video signal compression maximizes the output signal quality by appropriately allocating bits among individual pictures and GOPs in the output signal. The video signal compression of the present invention also applies compression methods that reduce noise in the output signal, by utilizing a macroblock-based tunable conditional replenishment technique. The conditional replenishment technique exploits the similarities among images in the variably-sized GOPs to further minimize output bit rate and maximize the output signal quality. An analysis-by-synthesis method is also provided to select a best asynchronous sampling method among various generated candidate output streams.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 11, 2001Publication date: February 21, 2002Applicant: MediaFlow, LLC.Inventors: Nuggehally S. Patent number: 5598212Abstract: A scanning format conversion circuit for performing the mutual conversion between a progressive scanning format and a zig-zag scanning format to read or write N.times.N discrete cosine transform coefficients from or into a memory in a coding process or a decoding process of a video system. The scanning format conversion circuit comprises a pure logic circuit including an up/down counting circuit, a down counting circuit, first to third selection circuits, a comparison circuit, a phase change circuit, and an accumulation circuit. With this construction, the mutual conversion between the progressive scanning format and the zig-zag scanning format is performed on the basis of the rule between the input orders and the actual positions of the discrete cosine transform coefficients. Therefore, the scanning format conversion circuit is capable of simplifying the implementation of ASIC and performing the scanning format conversion operation regardless of a block size.Type: GrantFiled: July 25, 1995Date of Patent: January 28, 1997Assignee: Korea Telecommunication AuthorityInventors: Yong S. Patent number: 5357526Abstract: A method for and an apparatus for correcting errors of compressed digital data, using a dual decoding system for correcting errors generated at the data by adding parity bits having an error correction capability for K symbols to the data fields of the data. Errors of up to K are corrected by the C.sub.1 field- and C.sub.2 field-decodings. After the error correction, a determination is made about the presence of errors in the corrected data so that an erroneous detection and an erroneous correction of errors are prevented, thereby minimizing an influence by an error propagation generated upon the extension of compressed data. The present invention achieves an improvement in error correcting capability for compressed digital image data.Type: GrantFiled: December 28, 1992Date of Patent: October 18, 1994Assignee: Goldstar Co., Ltd.Inventors: Gook H.
