  • Patent number: 6542742
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the problem of cell selection, for e.g. cell handover, in mobile telecommunication systems, and more particularly to the problem of selecting the optimum cell among cells with differing capabilities due to different air interface modes. Known algorithms for cell selection and handover are extended by applying additional criteria that take into account the capabilities, due to different modulation and coding schemes, of the mobile station and the base stations that are possible candidates. The quality of service (“QoS”) is predicted for the different cell candidates based on a combination of signal strength or C/I, different cell capabilities, multislot capability, etc. Then the cell is selected for which the predicted QoS is maximum. In another embodiment the invention is extended by taking into account further criteria which are suitable from a system point of view, e.g. to avoid a significant increase of average outage probability or interference level.

  • Patent number: 6359877
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for minimizing overhead in packet re-transmission in a communication system. Each packet is given a sequence number, based on a current transmission rate, the size of the packet, and a previously assigned sequence number. The packet size can be adapted so that the entire packet fits into a single transmission block. The packet size may also be adapted based on throughput. The packet size may be adapted based on the transmission rate and/or throughput, whether the packet is being transmitted the first time or if it is being re-transmitted. Alternately, if the packet is being re-transmitted, the packet is transmitted at its original transmission rate, regardless of the current transmission rate.

  • Patent number: 6347217
Abstract: Method and systems for reporting and analyzing link quality for radiocommunications are described. Use of frame erasure information (e.g., frame erasure rate (FER)) is highlighted. Presentation of frame erasure information can be segregated on a per-connection or per-cell basis, in addition to system-wide output. Moreover, frame erasure information can be correlated with geographical location of a mobile, the mobile's handover status or the equipment type of the mobile station to provide the network operator with a better understanding of quality issues within the network.

  • Patent number: 6298081
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for channel hopping between mobile stations (MS1-MS3) and a base station (BS1) in a radio communications system. A channel allocation means (211) within the base station (BS1) generates channel hopping sequences that are transmitted via a control channel (SACCH) to hopping sequence lists (204-206) in the mobile stations (MS1-MS3). The hopping sequences are also transmitted to corresponding hopping sequence lists (201-203) in the base station (BS1). A channel hopping sequence is divided into a number of sequence intervals (Ti) corresponding to the time between two adjacent channel hops within a channel hopping sequence. In the channel allocation means (211) the attenuation (&dgr;) of the connections (F1-F3) and the interference (I(channel,t)) of the channels are continuously being observed within each sequence interval (Ti).

  • Patent number: 6243565
Abstract: A transmitter diversity assembly and an associated method for a radio transmitter. When coupled to a radio transmitter to form a portion thereof, signal diversity is created to overcome multi-path fading. A plurality of antennas are freely selectable to be coupled to receive bursts of a communication signal, modulated to be transmitted on any of selected carriers. By altering the carriers upon which the bursts of the communication signal are transmitted and the spatially-separated antennas used to transduce the bursts of the communication signal, both transmission space diversity and frequency diversity is created. Polarization diversity is further provided by utilization of dual-polarized antennas.

  • Patent number: 6212384
Abstract: The source cell of a radio signal broadcast within a cellular radio network is determined by several alternative techniques. Each involves either a mobile station or a base station broadcasting a system-unique identity signal from which the network can determine the source of the signal. From the unique source of the signal the network can determine the geographic source from which the signal originated and use that information to perform automatic system administration functions, such as, prepare a best neighbor list or perform frequency planning and allocation for the network.
