  • Patent number: 5377861
Abstract: An injection molded closure and a container has a closure with external ribs for preventing jamming together of adjacent closures in stacked relation, and facilitating self-alignment of stacked closures. The closure has a central circular panel and a sidewall extending generally upwardly therefrom. The sidewall has upper and lower vertical portions with a lateral offset portion extending therebetween, which define a plug-like portion of the closure. Upon engagement of the closure with a container, the plug-like section is inserted into the container opening. The ribs are spaced peripherally about the outside of the closure and include an upper closure-engaging surface for contact with the rim of another closure stacked therebelow, and a lower closure-engaging surface for contact with the lateral offset portion of the other closure stacked therebelow.

  • Patent number: 5294015
Abstract: A large easy opening plastic lid, such as for a five gallon paint can, having a peripheral flange with an annular locking ring that engages an annular bead on a container sidewall to retain the lid in sealed engagement with the container. The flange is formed with a plurality of peripherally spaced frangible lines of weakness, which, when broken, segment the peripheral flange into separate flange segments, each having a segment of the locking ring. Following rupture of the flange along the frangible lines of weakness, each of the flange segments is independently pivotable between two positions, a first lowered position in which the respective segments of the locking ring engage with the container bead to securely retain the lid on the container, and a second raised or winged position in which all of the respective segments of the locking ring are disengaged from the container bead to facilitate easy removal and replacement of the lid.

  • Patent number: 5238135
Abstract: A reclosable plastic lid having a peripheral flange with a substantially annular projection that engages an annular shoulder on a container sidewall to retain the lid initially on the container full of contents. The flange is formed with a weakened portion defining a tear strip which removes to detach spaced portions of the flange along with portions of the annular projections leaving flange portions which are folded upwardly about hinge lines to retracted positions out of locking engagement with said annular shoulder. With the tear strip removed and the remaining flange portions pivoted outwardly toward horizontal positions, it is much easier to remove the lid from the container. When the lid is re-applied to reclose the container, the remaining attached, flange portions are pivoted down into engagement with container shoulder to retain the lid on the container and thereby, prevent spillage of the container's contents.

  • Patent number: 4819825
Abstract: Disclosed is a container and closure assembly including a container having a substantially circular opening and an outer wall containing an upper retention bead and a lower, regularly-outwardly extending security ring. The closure includes a one-piece plastic body having a top panel and an encircling skirt depending from the top panel so as to be integrally attached thereto. The skirt includes a groove for locking engagement with the retention bead to retain the closure on the container. A circumferential line of weakness in the skirt wall defines a removable tear strip having a movable free edge and which is removable from an upper portion of the skirt wall by fracturing the skirt wall along the upper line of weakness. A tear strip is weakened so as to form a plurality of circumferentially-spaced segments throughout the substantial entirety of its periphery. The segments are separable one from another in response to a prying or wedging force applied to the tear strip at the free edge thereof.

  • Patent number: 4759465
Abstract: A one piece plastic closure is provided for a container having a retention bead. The enclosure includes a top panel with a skirt interlocked with the retention bead. A removable tear strip on the skirt includes a pull tab to facilitate the grasping thereof. A lift tab, connected to the upper portion of the skirt, facilitates removal of the closure after the tear strip has been torn away from the enclosure to remove its interlocking with the retention bead. A frangible bridge interconnects the pull tab and the lift tab and pulls the lift tab into a more accessible position as the tear strip is removed.

  • Patent number: 4732293
Abstract: An inexpensive, one-piece closure has a press-fit sealed engagement with a container which has a closure retention bead adjacent the open mouth of the container. A tear-off strip provides a tamper-evident feature and includes a pull tab for tearing off the strip thereby exposing a lift tab by which the closure may be lifted from the container. The lift tab is useful where the container has a security or saturn ring on the its sidewall projecting outwardly immediately below the skirt of the closure to limit access to the lower edge of the tear strip. Preferably, the lift-off tab is initially partially hidden behind the pull tab and is connected thereto, and the lift-off tab is exposed and pulled to a position to be accessible after the pull tab is grasped and pulled by the user to remove the tear off strip.

  • Patent number: 4422559
Abstract: A plastic container and closure are provided which may be repeatedly snapped together. The closure has an outer skirt and an inner concentric flange providing a channel to receive a container rim. A plurality of ribs having lower edges extending inward from the inner flange and at depth to contact and cam the container rim toward the channel and prevent the container rim from catching on the closure flange during an automatic capping operation. A tear strip on the container sidewall is located adjacent the lower edge of the closure skirt thereby preventing access to the lower edge of the closure skirt without destructive removal of the tear strip. A radially outwardly extending strip at the lower end of the container spaces the outer surface of the container sidewall, which may bear a label, from any flat supporting surface when the container is laid on its side to prevent damage to the label.
