  • Patent number: 10242704
Abstract: A plurality of commands is received from a host to perform at least one of reading data and writing data on a magnetic storage media of a Data Storage Device (DSD). The plurality of commands is clustered for performance based at least in part on a timing control of a fly-height heater of the DSD that is configured to adjust a flying height of a head of the DSD while the head is flying over the magnetic storage media. A cluster of commands is performed including the plurality of commands by controlling the head to perform at least one of reading and writing data on the magnetic storage media for the cluster of commands.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 21, 2018
Date of Patent: March 26, 2019
    Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.
Inventors: Haibao Zhao, Bernhard Hiller, Francis Crimi

  • Patent number: 9721767
Abstract: In some examples, a method comprising depositing a functional layer (e.g., a magnetic layer) over a substrate; depositing a granular layer over the functional layer, the granular layer including a first material defining a plurality of grains separated by a second material defining grain boundaries of the plurality of grains; removing the second material from the granular layer such that the plurality of grains of the granular layer define a hard mask layer on the functional layer; and removing portions of the functional layer not masked by the hard mask layer, wherein the depositing of the functional layer, the depositing of the granular layer, removing the second material, and removing the portions of the functional layer are performed in a vacuum environment.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 21, 2013
Date of Patent: August 1, 2017
Assignee: Regents of the University of Minnesota

  • Publication number: 20070003794
Abstract: A digital storage medium for use in data storage devices has two magnetic layers where the respective easy axes of the magnetic moments in the two layers are perpendicular to each other. Exchange coupling of the magnetic moments in the magnetic layers produces a resultant magnetic moment that is tilted out of the plane of the digital storage medium. The resultant magnetic moment of the medium allows the use of either a ring head, a single pole head, or a head that generates a field tilted at an angle for write operations.
