  • Publication number: 20060114855
Abstract: An approach is provided for supporting Quality of Service (QoS) signaling between radio networks. A request message is generated for configuring an air link of a first radio network according to a Quality of Service (QoS) requirement specified in the request message, wherein the request message is transmitted to first radio network. Communication with the first radio network is established to negotiate admission control according to the request message, wherein the first radio network assigns a traffic identifier for a traffic flow to be carried over the air link of the first radio network and an airlink of a second radio network based on the QoS requirement.

Abstract: A method, system and mobile station for handing off communications from a cellular radio access network, such as a code division multiple access (CDMA) radio access network, to an unlicensed mobile access network (UMAN) are provided. The handoff may be effected by a signaling sequence between the mobile station, an unlicensed network controller of the UMAN, a base station controller of the cellular radio access network and the core network. In this signaling sequence, the UMAN may be identified in various manners, such as by means of an otherwise unassigned pilot PN offset or by means of a band class and an invalid frequency.

  • Patent number: 6999436
Abstract: Method and apparatus for efficient routing of mobile node packets. Nodes in a network are configured to classify a received flow from a mobile node to a second node based upon a home address option in a packet in the flow if the address is present. The address is a home address of the mobile node. The classification has associated reserved resources at each node for the received flow. Therefore, the Quality of Service is maintained for the flow between the mobile node and the second node if the mobile node moves to a new location. Resources reserved in nodes in the old path are torn down and released, while reserved resources in nodes in the old and the new path need not be reserved again.

  • Publication number: 20050172014
Abstract: This invention provides an improved address management scheme in a mobile router (MR) that connects a mobile network into the Internet via an access network. The MR performs neighbor advertisement on behalf of mobile network nodes (MNNs) within the mobile network so that packets directed towards the MNNs are routed correctly to the MR, and then to the corresponding MNN, while maintaining standard address management procedures, such as IPv6 address management procedures, in the access network and in the mobile network.

  • Publication number: 20050169220
Abstract: A method includes connecting a mobile router (MR), also referred to herein as a gateway mobile terminal, of a mobile network (MONET) to an access point (AP) of an access network (AN) that includes an Access Router (AR); making a request to obtain a plurality of link addresses from a link address manager of the AN; allocating individual ones of the plurality of link addresses to individual ones of network nodes of the MONET; and performing a neighbor discovery procedure with the AR to send at least one neighbor advertisement to declare the allocated individual ones of the assigned plurality of link addresses. In one embodiment the request is made to obtain a set of link layer addresses (LLAs) that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes, while in another embodiment the request is made to obtain a group identification (Group_ID) that is used to formulate a set of LLAs that are allocated to individual ones of the network nodes.

  • Publication number: 20050147042
Abstract: A “loose ACK” method by which a radio access network of a cellular network monitors wireless transmission of packets according to a layered protocol including a radio layer (near the physical layer) and an upper layer, the method including: a step (23) of slow release—in what is called normal buffer management—in which the upper layer removes from a buffer maintained by the upper layer the oldest packet in the buffer when the buffer is full and a new packet arrives, and does so independently of whether the packet being removed has been acknowledged by the radio layer of the terminal; and a step (24) of local acknowledgement in which the radio layer sends an acknowledgement to the upper layer on the occurrence of a predetermined event. The local acknowledgement can trigger either special mode buffer management or release of the buffer to a target (entity or layer).

  • Patent number: 6882637
Abstract: The invention is a system and method for synchronizing the transmission of compressed headers in data packets between a transmitter and a receiver having a preferred wireless application which is an improvement of RFC2508. In a system having a transmitter transmitting a plurality of packets each containing a header to a receiver, a method of synchronizing the transmission of compressed headers between the transmitter and receiver in accordance with the invention includes transmitting a current packet from the transmitter to the receiver containing information that the transmitter is prepared to send subsequently transmitted packets in which the headers therein are to be compressed in comparison to the header contained in the current packet; and transmitting from the receiver to the transmitter an acknowledgment packet that the receiver has received the current packet.

  • Publication number: 20050007954
Abstract: A method of load balancing for packet data flows in a packet data network is provided. According to one embodiment, the method includes the steps of receiving a packet data flow and verifying whether the packet data flow belongs to one of the existing packet data delivery categories. The method also includes the steps of assigning a first delivery path indicator for the packet data delivery category, retrieving load conditions prevailing in the network, and checking whether one of the existing packet data delivery categories conforms to prescribed resource policy rules for one of the existing packet data delivery category. When the step of checking generates a negative result, the method involves the step of assigning an alternative delivery path indicator for the packet data delivery category. The invention also provides a method of categorizing packet data flows as belonging to a certain packet data delivery category.

  • Publication number: 20040225534
Abstract: The invention is a method for policy management in a network comprising at least a mobile node, a policy decision entity, a first policy enforcement entity and a second policy enforcement entity, wherein a handover from the first to the second policy enforcement entity is to be performed for the mobile node. The method includes the steps of transferring context information related to the mobile node comprising a policy session identifier from the first policy enforcement entity to the second policy enforcement entity, deleting the policy session state locally in the first policy enforcement entity, and sending a policy session update request from the second policy enforcement entity to the policy decision entity based on the policy session identifier received from the first policy enforcement entity. Thus, a seamless handover in terms of policy can be achieved.

  • Publication number: 20030088675
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for generating a bearer setup request in a mobile, or other, communication system. An application-level bearer setup request generator is positioned at the application level of the communication system. A request is forwarded to a transport level. And a bearer setup request signal generator, located at the transport level, generates a transport-level bearer setup request that is routed to the bearer manager. Bearer setup is performed by the bearer manager and a response is provided through the transport layer to the application level, and back to a communication node when the bearer setup is performed.

  • Publication number: 20030074452
Abstract: A system and method for determining which of a user node and an IP network will establish Quality of Service (QoS). The IP network transmits a message indicating whether the IP network, the user node, or both the IP network and the user node are capable of establishing QoS. If only the IP network or the user node can establish QoS, then it is done in that manner. If either can establish QoS, the user node may select which entity will establish QoS.

  • Patent number: 6542931
Abstract: A method and apparatus for eliminating the inefficient use of network bandwidth cause by numerous acknowledgment transmitted by the receiver to the transmitter by providing sparse feedback from the receiver to the transmitter indicating receipt of packets having headers to be used as reference headers. In the invention, upon receipt in the receiver of a packet having a reference header, a feedback is provided to the transmitter indicating receipt of the packet having the reference header. Thereafter, the receiver waits a predetermined period of time before providing another feedback in response to another packet having a reference header. The predetermined period of time allows time for the feedback to be received by the transmitter and for information from the transmitter indicating receipt of the feedback to be received by the receiver.
