  • Publication number: 20080002617
Abstract: A packet service enhancement mode (60) and packet service enhancer (35) is provided for operating a packet channel (25) existing over an air interface (27) between a base station node and a user equipment unit of a telecommunications network. As one aspect of the technology, a packet service enhancement method comprises performing a monitoring of a radio link connection carried by the packet channel and, in accordance with the monitoring, both modifying an operational parameter for the packet channel and dropping non-consecutive packets from the packet channel.

  • Patent number: 6668175
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for providing radio access bearer services for different applications in a network having a core network and a radio access network through radio access bearers between the networks are presented. One or more session traffic flows being sent by an application are identified, the identified session is characterized in the form of parameters needed for the determination of the one or more radio access bearers. The characterized parameters are converted into radio access bearer attributes. One or more radio access bearers defined by the attributes are requested and established. Each session is mapped onto a correct radio access bearer established upon receiving the request. The one or more radio access bearers are released when no longer needed.

  • Patent number: 6668159
Abstract: A bit rate indicator for use in the mobile station of a radiotelephone system which provides an indication to the user of the maximal bit rate available in the current cell and the predicted bit rate the user can expect to achieve if a session were initiated in his present location. In calculating the maximal bit rate, the mobile station receives a message from the base station indicating the base station's capabilities, such as support for multi-slot operations and coding/modulation schemes. The mobile station then uses the base station's capabilities along with its own capabilities to determine the maximal bit rate. In calculating predicted bit rate, the mobile station measures the link quality of at least one channel and based on, at least one of, the measured link quality and mobile's capabilities, determines a predicted bit rate the user would achieve in his present location. Both the maximal and predicted bit rates can be outputted on the mobile station for comparison by the user.

  • Patent number: 6647265
Abstract: A control system for handling a range of data transfer rates within a telecommunication network is disclosed. The system comprises an application interpreter for generating at least one bearer request; an admission control apparatus for matching said at least one bearer request with at least one offered bearer to produce a negotiated bearer; and a radio resource manager for receiving the negotiated bearer and maintaining a level of quality specified in said bearer request.

  • Publication number: 20010056560
Abstract: Hybrid ARQ techniques for error handling are described. The amount of redundancy transmitted in response to a first NACK message associated with a first attempt to decode a data block is variable. The number of redundancy units transmitted (and/or requested) can be selected based on various criteria including, for example, estimated channel quality, estimated block quality, memory usage, a number of outstanding blocks, etc.

  • Patent number: 6285874
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to the problem of determining the identity of a cell for e.g. cell handoff or automatic frequency planning, and more particularly to the problem of determining the true identity of a cell when only the transmission frequency and a non-unique identity code is known. A candidate list is created for each cell. This candidate list is created based on a function of various elements e.g. distance, transmission power, cell type, and antenna placement. The cells are then ranked on the candidate list based on this function. When a particular frequency/code combination is detected, the candidate list is then consulted, and the highest ranking cell with the same frequency/code combination is chosen as being the signal source. In an alternative embodiment the neighbor cell list is used to create the candidate list.

  • Patent number: 6246877
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of performing handover in a mobile radio system. The mobile radio system performs quality measurements on signals transmitted (300) between a mobile terminal and predetermined radio base stations. Handover is performed (301, 302, 303) when some of the measured signal strengths exceeds the signal strength for the radio base station to which the mobile terminal for the moment is set up, added to a handover value. The handover value is dependent on measured signal strengths and neighboring cell relation values. The neighboring cell relation values depend on a probability for handover to be performed from one radio base station to another radio base station in the mobile radio system.

  • Patent number: 6208663
Abstract: A communication system supports multiple modulation/coding schemes. When connection quality drops below an acceptable threshold, ARQ techniques use an alternative modulation/coding scheme which is more resistant to noise and/or interference. Flexible resegmentation and mapping of information blocks is supported.
