Patent number: 5246406Abstract: A torque transmission system for effecting a driving connection between laterally spaced driving, and driven shafts. A fist wheel is mounted on the driving shaft and a second wheel is mounted on the driven shaft. Each of the wheels have substantially identical pitch diameters. An endless flexible torque transmitter operatively connects the first and second wheels. A traveling insert band circumscribes and operatively engages one of the wheels at a time, and when the traveling insert band engages one of the wheels, the insert band is located radially inwardly of the endless flexible torque transmitter. The traveling insert band has leading and trailing ends located in substantially circumferentially opposed juxtaposition when the traveling insert band operatively engages one of the wheels. Mechanisms are also provided selectively to derail the leading end of the traveling insert band from that wheel operatively engaged thereby.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1992Date of Patent: September 21, 1993Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 5047937Abstract: A control system for an engine-CVT drivetrain controls the ratio rate of the CVT to control the speed of the vehicle engine, providing a means for improved control over the transient response of the engine-CVT drivetrain.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1990Date of Patent: September 10, 1991Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: Hamid Vahabzadeh, Samuel M. Linzell

Patent number: 5046177Abstract: An improved controller for an engine-CVT drivetrain provides increased performance of the vehicle during periods of desired acceleration by controlling the engine throttle to provide greater torque during periods of acceleration without a large sacrifice to fuel economy.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 1990Date of Patent: September 3, 1991Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 4747809Abstract: A torque sensitive squeeze control for a variable ratio pulley drive system has a fluid translating unit, such as a pump, disposed in the input torque path. One member of the fluid translating unit is rotated by the input drive shaft while another member is fixed for rotation with an input pulley shaft. If a rotational difference between the input drive shaft and the pulley shaft is present, the fluid translating unit is effective to increase the pressure in the squeeze control piston of the input pulley thereby increasing the torque capacity of the pulley. A speed differential will occur when a torque difference between the two shafts if present. The hydraulic control for the output pulley is via a controlled servo valve mechanism which permits operator control of the drive ratio between the pulleys independently of the squeeze force on the input pulley.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 1987Date of Patent: May 31, 1988Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 4710879Abstract: The speed ratio of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is adjusted in relation to the actual ratio R.sub.a and a desired ratio R.sub.d so that the time required to change the ratio by any multiplicative step is substantially the same regardless of the ratio provided by the transmission. The ratio error E.sub.r is defined according to the ratio R.sub.d /R.sub.a, and the ratio is adjusted at a rate determined in accordance therewith.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 1986Date of Patent: December 1, 1987Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 4684358Abstract: A variable diameter pulley and belt drive has a torque and pitch radius sensitive squeeze control. The variable diameter pulleys are interconnected by a flexible belt or chain. The input pulley is connected to a power source through a pair of meshing gears and a floating link. A hydraulic control mechanism establishes the desired diameter ratio of the pulleys while the floating link is responsive to the torque transmitted to adjust the center distance between the pulleys and establish the squeeze force on the belt.Type: GrantFiled: July 3, 1986Date of Patent: August 4, 1987Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 4644820Abstract: A geared neutral continuously variable transmission has a variable ratio belt drive, a fixed ratio drive and a planetary gear set. The fixed ratio drive is selectively connectible with the transmission input by a friction clutch and with the planetary gear set by another friction clutch. A one-way clutch is disposed in parallel drive relation with the other friction clutch. When the fixed drive ratio is not transmitting torque, it can be effectively removed from the drive path to increase efficiency and reduce noise generation by disengaging the friction clutches.Type: GrantFiled: February 3, 1986Date of Patent: February 24, 1987Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventors: James P. Macey, Hamid Vahabzadeh

Patent number: 4608031Abstract: A hydraulic control for a continuously variable pulley type transmission, has a torque sensing mechanism which is responsive to the torque transmitted by a gearing arrangement drivingly connected with the variable pulley drive. The torque sensing mechanism controls a valve which supplies a pressure signal to a control valve for the variable pulley drive. The control valve in response to the pressure signal and a position signal from the variable pulley drive controls the flow of pressure fluid to and from a hydraulic control mechanism. The hydraulic control mechanism controls the torque capacity of the variable pulley drive.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1985Date of Patent: August 26, 1986Assignee: General Motors CorporationInventor: Hamid Vahabzadeh
