Abstract: Disclosed are compositions useful in a wide variety of applications, including heat transfer fluids which possess a highly desirable and unexpectedly superior combination of properties, and heat transfer systems and methods based on these fluids. The preferred heat transfer fluid comprises from about 1 to about 40 percent, on a weight basis, of carbon dioxide (CO2) and from about 99 to about 60 percent, on a weight basis, of a compound having the Formula I XCFzR3-z (I), where X is a C2 or a C3 unsaturated, substituted or unsubstituted, alkyl radical, each R is independently Cl, F, Br, I or H, and z is 1 to 3. A preferred compound of Formula I is tetrafluoropropene, particularly 1,1,1,3-tetrafluoropropene.

Abstract: The invention relates to azeotropic and azeotrope-like mixtures of 1,1,1-trifluoroethane (HFC-143a) and hydrogen fluoride and a process for separating the azeotrope-like mixtures. The compositions of the invention are useful as an intermediate in the production of HFC-143a. The latter is useful as a nontoxic, zero ozone depleting fluorocarbon useful as a solvent, blowing agent, refrigerant, cleaning agent and aerosol propellant.

Abstract: The present invention provides a composition for use in compression refrigeration and air-conditioning. The composition comprises: (a) a refrigerant selected from the group consisting of hydrofluorocarbon and hydrochlorofluorocarbon; and (b) a sufficient amount to provide lubrication of at least one fluorinated silicone. The fluorinated silicone has units therein selected from the group consisting of fluoroalkyl and alkyl. If both fluoroalkyl and alkyl units are present in the fluorinated silicone, at least 25% of the units are fluoroalkyl. The fluorinated silicone has a molecular weight between about 280 and about 6,000; a viscosity of about 10 to about 300 centistokes at 38.degree. C. (0.1 to 3 cm.sup.2 /sec), and is miscible in combination with the refrigerant in the range between -40.degree. C. and at least +20.degree. C.
