  • Patent number: 7903573
Abstract: A method and system for calculating data traffic flow in a communications network are disclosed. The communications network comprises a plurality of nodes including a plurality of source nodes, a plurality of destination nodes, and a plurality of intermediate nodes. Each of the intermediate nodes includes at least one elbow comprising one ingress interface and one egress interface of the intermediate node. The method includes obtaining local data traffic measurements at each of the elbows, wherein the local data traffic measurements comprise data traffic arriving at the intermediate node via the ingress interface and leaving the intermediate node via the egress interface. The local data traffic measurements are used in calculation of the traffic flow and may be used, for example, to generate data traffic matrix information using data traffic matrix inference or data traffic matrix estimation.

Date of Patent: March 8, 2011
    Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.
Inventors: Joshua Singer, Hani El-Sakkout, Vassilios Liatsos, Frederick Serr
  • Patent number: 7848249
Abstract: Systems and methods for estimating aggregate bandwidths of primary traffic flows are provided. Tighter upper bounds on aggregate bandwidths for arbitrary combinations of primary traffic flows may be computed. These tighter bounds are highly useful in configuring backup tunnels to protect a node in the event of failure in that the total backup bandwidth burden on individual links may be determined more accurately to permit optimal use of available backup bandwidth capacity.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: December 7, 2010
    Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.
Inventors: Anna Charny, Hani El-Sakkout, Barry Richards
  • Patent number: 7693061
Abstract: There is provided a traffic placement method in a communications network, the communications network comprising a plurality of nodes, the nodes being connected to one another by links, the method comprising selecting a (possibly non-strict) subset from a given set of traffic flow demands and calculating a plurality of paths for the selected demands under consideration of a set of constraints using an algorithm hybridization combining backtrack search with local consistency techniques (BT+CS) and guiding search by the use of one or more probe generators, that is, search techniques that solve a routing sub-problem or an arbitrary relaxation of the traffic placement problem. By using a hybrid algorithm that integrates other solvers (search techniques) into BT+CS through the use of probe generators, a more powerful search strategy can be achieved compared to BT+CS or the individual search techniques.
