  • Patent number: 7753955
Abstract: This present invention describes methods and compositions useful for the reconstruction of various soft tissue features such as lips, areola, and many other features by taking a mold of the skin feature to be replaced, such as the areola, prior to surgical resection, re-creating the size and shape of the soft tissue feature, for example, the nipple and areola, and making a polymer or biopolymer scaffold that is biocompatible, has the ability to allow the epithelization of the skin cells over the polymer, the capability of cell integration into the body of the scaffold, as well as the capability of infiltration of surrounding nerve fibers into the substance of the scaffold, so that the patient may have the benefit of a reconstructed soft tissue feature that not only has the same size and shape and appearance as the native tissue, but also has functional sensation.

  • Patent number: 5843452
Abstract: A composition for use in immunosuppression therapy is disclosed. The composition includes an immunosuppressant drug, such as cyclosporin A, and an ethanol extract of the root xylem of Tripterygium wilfordii. The extract is effective alone, or in combination with such an immunosuppressant, in the treatment of transplantation rejection. Also disclosed is a method of immunosuppression that includes administering to a subject a pharmaceutically effective amount of an immunosuppressant drug and an extract of the type above, in an amount effective to potentiate the action of the drug.

  • Patent number: 5648003
Abstract: A protective device that provides protection against infection by accidental skin puncturing. The device includes a flexible expanse, at least a portion of which has a multi-layer construction that includes (i) inner and outer, flexible, electrically conductive layers, and (ii) a flexible insulative sheet separating said conductive layers. A voltage applied across the two layers is effective to heat the tip of a needle, scalpel, or the like, when such pierces the cover, to a temperature effective to destroy at least a portion of the infectious agent.

  • Patent number: 5002563
Abstract: A suture and a suturing method are set forth for suturing a wound in the tissue of a patient and defined by tissue edges. The suture comprises an alloy member having a first end portion, a second end portion, and a first undeformed shape. It is deformable into a second deformed shape. The member has the property of recovering from its second shape towards its first shape upon the second shape being subjected to specified conditions. The first shape is a suturing loop adapted to draw and hold the tissue edges defining the wound together. The second shape is adapted to allow the member to be drawn through the tissue in position for the loop to form. The method comprises inserting such a member while it is in its second shape into position for it to assume its first suturing loop shape and subjecting it to conditions which cause it to recover towards its first shape.
