  • Patent number: 6032042
Abstract: A cellular radio network including mobile radio stations is provided in which at least some of the mobile radio stations are capable of moving in a primary network, and in at least one other network having a location area configuration different from that of the primary network. The user can manually prevent all location updatings and location updating attempts between the different networks and, thus, temporarily "lock" the use of the mobile station within a particular network. Not even an location updating attempt into a "foreign network" is made. It is up to the user of the mobile station to decide when the user activates the registration function. The locking function remains activated until deactivation by the user. Subsequent to the deactivation, location updatings between the networks are performed in a normal manner.

  • Patent number: 5953667
Abstract: In a cellular radio network in which mobile stations roam, in addition to location updating of each mobile station with the accuracy of one location area, a so-called temporary subscriber-specific paging area is determined. Each mobile station initiates the determining of the temporary paging area in the subscriber data base of the cellular radio network after being located in a cell for a sufficiently long period. The temporary paging area is smaller than the location area (e.g., one cell and possibly at least one adjacent cell), and thus the paging of a mobile station can be focused on a small area, i.e., the temporary paging area. It is thus unnecessary to page over the entire location area, and paging time can be reduced and capacity of the cellular radio network spared.

  • Patent number: 5832381
Abstract: A cellular radio network, subscriber equipment for the cellular radio network, and a method for carrying out a location updating in the cellular radio network, in which in the cellular radio network, or at least in part of it, several coincident logical location area levels (e.g. I, II, III) are provided, these levels being hierarchical with respect to location area size (e.g. LA1(L1), LA1(L2), LA2(L2), LA1(L3), LA2(L3), LA3(L3)). Location area density is thus different at different location area levels: large location areas are used at some location area levels, whereas small location areas are in use at others, correspondingly. Users/terminal equipments may either have a relatively fixed allocation to certain location area levels, or the terminal equipment may dynamically select the location area level appropriate at a given moment.
