  • Patent number: 6991705
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for stabilizing the pH of a pulp suspension with buffering agents and to a process for producing paper from a stabilized pulp suspension. The alkalinity of the pulp suspension is increased by a combination of an alkali metal hydroxide feed and a carbon dioxide feed. Said feeds provide a significant buffering effect which stablilizes the pH of said pulp suspension for the paper making process.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 12, 1998
Date of Patent: January 31, 2006
    Assignee: Aga Aktiebolag
Inventors: Hannu Juhani Leino, Anna Linnea Holmberg
  • Patent number: 6623599
Abstract: A papermaking process wherein calcium carbonate is included in a pulp suspension. The dissolution of the calcium carbonate in the papermaking system is substantially retarded by the introduction of carbon dioxide to said pulp suspension. The invention also provides processes for the production of paper or board in papermaking systems wherein solid calcium carbonate is present as a filler and/or pigment.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 1, 2000
Date of Patent: September 23, 2003
    Assignees: AGA Aktiebolag, UPM-Kymmene Corporation
Inventors: Auli Laurila-Lumme, Heikki Pakarinen, Hannu Juhani Leino

  • Patent number: 6589387
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for improving the drainage or dewatering of cellulosic pulp suspensions in a paper making machine, a drying machine or the like assembly. The invention also relates to a process for producing a dried cellulosic product from said pulp suspension. The drainage of said pulp suspension is improved by treating it with carbon dioxide just prior to its entering a dewatering device such as the wire section of a paper machine.

  • Patent number: 6540870
Abstract: The invention relates to papermaking processes wherein calcium carbonate is included in a pulp suspension. The dissolution of the calcium carbonate in the papermaking system is prevented or substantially retarded by the introduction of carbon dioxide to said pulp suspension in connection with subjecting said calcium carbonate in said papermaking system to pH conditions of about 8 or lower. The invention also provides processes for the production of paper or board in papermaking systems wherein solid calcium carbonate is present as a filler and/or pigment.

  • Patent number: 6540878
Abstract: The present invention relates to a stabilized calcium carbonate filler, a process for stabilizing calcium carbonate, the use of the stabilized filler in a paper making system, and an improved paper making process wherein calcium carbonate is used as a filler. Specifically, the invention relates to a process wherein the rate of dissolution of calcium carbonate filler is retarded as compared to the rate found in conventional paper making processes. The rate of dissolution is retarded by addition of carbon dioxide to a slurry containing the calcium carbonate filler.

  • Patent number: 6172183
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process and apparatus for the cleaning of crude tall oil soap. Crude soap floating on top of a layer of black liquor is cleaned with carbon dioxide, in a tall oil recovery system containing a cleaning vessel (T) for crude tall oil soap and black liquor. Said vessel has a carbon dioxide inlet (6) for introducing cleaning carbon dioxide into the soap. The cleaning vessel (T) is also provided with a black liquor separately from the cleaned soap. The cleaned soap may be acidified so as to provide tall oil.
