Patent number: 7400686Abstract: A apparatus and method for improved performance in radio telecommunications systems, and in particular multi-carrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) networks that employ pulse-shaping filters on the transmit side of a radio link. In order to more accurately transmit a radio signal bearing a symbol sequence, the modulated and spread information stream is upsampled using a technique that involves inserting zeros in the frequency domain. A corresponding downsampling procedure on the receive side permits reconstruction of the transmitted symbols. A new channel estimation algorithm may also be used, and the improved channel estimation advantageously employed to obtain more faithful symbol detection.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2003Date of Patent: July 15, 2008Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Mohammad J Borran, Prabodh Varshney, Hannu Vilpponen, Panayiotis Papadimitriou

Patent number: 7286603Abstract: A system and method for the efficient transmission of information in a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless telecommunication system. To increase the rate of reliable transmission, an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is implemented in a direct-spread CDMA network, this combination sometimes being referred to as multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA). Information (such as voice and data), interspersed with a known pilot signal, is encoded and spread across the frequency domain, rather than the time domain as in traditional CDMA; the allowable transmission bandwidth is divided into a number of carriers. To achieve even larger transmission rates, the guardband between carriers is eliminated. To prevent interference, the number of pilot transmissions is reduced and a corresponding number of frequency bins at the border of an OFDM block are loaded with zeros. The receiver simply ignores these subcarriers when reconstructing the transmitted signal.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2003Date of Patent: October 23, 2007Assignee: Nokia CorporationInventors: Prabodh Varshney, Hannu Vilpponen, Mohammad J. Patent number: 7031334Abstract: Signalling information is conveyed from a transmitting device (101) to a receiving device (102) in a cellular radio network where user data transmission takes place on a traffic channel in discrete transmission bursts (111–120; 211–220; 310–313) consisting of consecutive symbols. A piece of signalling information is formatted into symbols which are transmitted as a block of consecutive symbols (FACCH) in a certain transmission burst of a traffic channel. It is also indicated within said certain transmission burst that it contains symbols carrying signalling information.Type: GrantFiled: March 3, 2000Date of Patent: April 18, 2006Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones, Ltd.Inventors: Eero Nikula, Harri Jokinen, Hannu Vilpponen

Patent number: 6980591Abstract: A method and an arrangement are presented for processing received data blocks in a digital radio receiver. Received data blocks are equalized (306) and channel decoded, (309) after which they are checked (310) for errors. Additionally there is monitored (303) the amount of received but not yet equalized and channel decoded data. As a response to a finding indicating that an equalized and channel decoded data block contains errors (310), it is checked (313) whether the amount of received but not yet equalized and channel decoded data is below a certain threshold. As a response to a finding indicating that the amount of received but not yet equalized and channel decoded data is below said threshold, the data block which was found to contain errors is iteratively equalized and channel decoded. By adaptively allowing iterative equalization and channel decoding, retransmissions may be avoided.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2001Date of Patent: December 27, 2005Assignee: Nokia Mobile Phones, Ltd.Inventors: Markku Pukkila, Hannu Vilpponen

Publication number: 20040028021Abstract: A system and method for the efficient transmission of information in a code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless telecommunication system. The rate of reliable transmission is increased by implementing an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme in, for example, a direct-spread CDMA network, resulting in a multi-carrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) system. Information (such as voice and data), is encoded, divided, and spread across the frequency domain, rather than in the time domain as in traditional CDMA; the allowable transmission bandwidth is divided into a number of carriers. Using this scheme, a number of loading parameters such as code rate, data rate, and the number of streams into which the encoded data is divided may be varied to increase the performance of the system. Application of the variable loading parameter may be a function of channel quality, such as the presence of noise or the channel fading state.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2003Publication date: February 12, 2004Inventors: Prabodh Varshney, Hannu Vilpponen, Mohammad Borran, Panayiotis Papadimitriou

Publication number: 20030081569Abstract: A cellular communications system includes a plurality of mobile stations located within at least one cell; a base transceiver station (BTS) for servicing the cell; a base station controller (BSC) coupled to the BTS; and a Call Admission processor coupled to the BTS for receiving a call admission request from mobile stations located in the cell served by the BTS. The processor, which could be co-located with the BSC, grants cellular communications system resources to mobile stations based at least in part on a level of service required by the mobile stations and on a location of the mobile stations within the cell. For a mobile station having a high bandwidth requirement and that is determined to be located at the edge of the cell, the mobile station is preferentially granted system resources by being assigned a plurality of time slots per frame for forming one radio information block, and is operated with a non-convolutional modulation format and with turbo channel coding.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2001Publication date: May 1, 2003Applicant: Nokia CorporationInventors: Thomas A.
