  • Publication number: 20050077221
Abstract: The present invention is a method of producing porous beads, which comprises the steps of providing a first liquid phase comprising a bead matrix material and essentially edgy templating particle(s), said particle(s) being treated with a surface modifying agent; providing a second liquid phase which is immiscible with the first liquid phase; contacting the first phase and the second phase under conditions resulting in an emulsion of droplets comprised of the first liquid phase dispersed in the continuous second liquid phase; transforming the droplets to mesoporous beads by solidification of the liquid; and removing the templating particle(s) from the beads without causing any essential change of the surrounding bead, whereby hierarchical networks of pores are provided in the beads.

  • Patent number: 6635174
Abstract: A matrix including: a) a polymeric base matrix including macropores (pore system 1) and b) an interior material, possibly porous (pore system 2), retained within the macropores. The matrix is characterized in that there is a continuous free volume between the interior material and the pore walls of the macropores. A method for manufacturing a matrix including a base matrix having macropores in which an interior material is located. The method is characterized in including the steps: (I) providing a base matrix having macropores; (ii) filling the macropores with a soluble form of the interior material; (iii) transforming the insoluble from to an insoluble form; (iv) shrinking the insoluble form; and (v) irreversibly stabilizing the material in its shrunken form. The matrix can be used in separation methods, cell culturing, solid phase synthesis of organic molecules, and in catalytic reactions (such as enzyme reactions) and other uses in which porous support matrices are used.

  • Patent number: 6590096
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing porous polysaccharide beads, comprising: (a) mixing a water-based solution of a polysaccharide under stirring with an essentially water-immiscible first organic phase to form an emulsion which separates into two continuous phases; (b) adding a second organic phase comprising an emulsifier and an organic solvent to form a three-phase system; (c) allowing the three-phase system to emulsify; and (d) decreasing the temperature below the gelling point of the polysaccharide, thereby obtaining beads having two sets of pores, said method being characterised in that the emulsifier is a water-insoluble polymer capable of stabilizing said three-phase system.

  • Publication number: 20030083310
Abstract: In a process for producing an iron-dextran compound for use in parenteral treatment of iron-deficiency in humans or animals a stable compound of desired relatively low molecular weight is obtained by using first hydrogenation and then oxidation to convert reducing terminal groups on the dextran molecules before reaction with the iron. By varying the ratio of hydrogenated groups to oxygenated groups the average molecular weight of the resulting iron-dextran compound can be varied.

  • Patent number: 4960378
Abstract: The gas burner comprises a mixer, a conical transition member adjacent thereto on which a cylindrical burner shell with openings and whose top is closed by a burner lid is mounted. Clamped between the burner lid and the transition member is a throttling cylinder which is filled by the super-stoichiometric gas mixture at super-atmospheric pressure. In order to avoid burner pulsations the cylinder has throttling openings whose total area is 2 to 10% of the total area of the openings. The throttling openings are in a plurality of circular rows above one another in such a manner that they are on a respective vertical line. Vertical, imperforate sections of the burner shell are opposed to the lines so that the mixture jets from the throttling openings do not impinge directly on the openings. The cylinder is provided at a coaxial spacing of 5 mm from the burner shell.

  • Patent number: 4457704
Abstract: The method and apparatus sucks the entire combustion air volume in laterally with respect to the direction of flow of the air current with the help of the impulse of a fuel gas jet out of the air current into a mixing pipe and the formation of a differential pressure between the mixing pipe input and the waste gas output into the air current is prevented with the help of current guidance sheet metal pieces. The burner is arranged in a shaft-like housing, the fuel gas nozzle and the lower part of mixing pipe are surrounded by a pot-shaped current guidance sheet metal piece. A cylindrical current guidance sheet metal piece adjoins the cooled burner plate. The burner which, for example, can be used in dryers, for heating room air with so-called make-up air units and in gas water heaters, operates completely independently of the air flowing around it in a wide heat load range, without any change in the air coefficient. Because of the super-stoichiometric premixing of the burning gas with the air, the NO.sub.
