Abstract: A process and a winding machine for winding up paper or cardboard utilizes a support roller with a compressible outer layer of at least 5 mm in thickness and a modulus of compression of less than 10 MPa and the contact pressure controlled so that the width of the nip has a minimum value which is a function of the speed with which the web is wound up.

Abstract: Webs of paper or cardboard are rolled up using carrying or supporting rollers or pressing rollers with a hollow cylindrical body of a rigid material to which a deformable layer is applied. The deformable layer consists of a cellular plastic material partly with open pores and partly with pores which are closed on themselves and in which the pore size can be less than 5 mm. The compression modulus of the material is less than 10 MPa.

Abstract: A winding machine has a pair of support rollers defining an upwardly open cradle holding a plurality of rolls centered on a common roll axis, a slitter for cutting a wide web into a plurality of strips and feeding each of the strips to the rolls for winding up thereon, and a knockout element having a surface curved convexly toward and engageable with the rolls. This knockout element can be displaced toward the rolls to engage the surface against the rolls and push the rolls out of the cradle while axially separating the rolls.

Abstract: A winding machine for producing rolls (3) having a pressure roller system which includes a horizontal, vertically movable cross-head (8) to which a series of freely rotatable and individually movable roll segments (9) are secured side-by-side and with bolts parallel to the cross-head (8). In addition, there are piston/cylinder units (10) for adjusting the pressure exerted by the roll segments (9) on the rolls (3). Into the bearing of each roll segment (9) on the cross-head (8) is integrated a component which either increases the bearing pressure as the distance between the roll segment (9) and the cross-head decreases or decreases the bearing pressure as the distance between the roll segment (9) and the cross-head increases. Thus the most uniform possible pressure on all rolls (3) is ensured and negative effects owing to excessive differences in diameter between the rolls (3) are prevented.
