  • Patent number: 4528337
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of vinyl chloride polymers or copolymers by microsuspension polymerization of vinyl chloride or vinyl chloride and up to 30% by weight, based on the total monomer content, of .alpha.-olefinically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable with vinyl chloride comprising the steps of:(1) dispersing the monomer or the monomer mixture in water in the presence of from 0.1 to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the monomer content, of microsuspension dispersion auxiliaries and from 0.001 to 3% by weight, based on the total weight of the monomer content, of microsuspension monomer - soluble radical - initiators;(2) homogenizing said dispersion so that monomer droplets mostly having a mean diameter of from 0.1 to 3 .mu.

  • Patent number: 4377672
Abstract: The subject of the invention is a microsuspension polymerization in water of vinyl chloride, which is carried out in the presence of monomer-soluble radical-initiators and emulsifiers. According to the invention, from about 0.01 to 0.5% by weight, based on the weight of the water, of polymers containing mono-basic or dibasic carboxylic acid units and/or salts thereof are added. Furthermore, in a preferred embodiment, emulsifiers containing perfluorinated alkyl groups are also used. Stabilization of the microsuspension latex, which is per se sensitive to shearing action, and reduction in the amount of emulsifiers used are achieved.

  • Patent number: 4128516
Abstract: In the process for the gentle degasification of coagulation-sensitive PVC latices in a confined space under reduced pressure and stirring at elevated temperatures with steam injection onto the latex surface, the improvement consisting essentially of conducting said degasification at a selected temperature from 50.degree. C to 80.degree. C at a pressure corresponding to the boiling pressure of water at the selected temperature, stirring said latex by an inclined stirrer whereby a rolling action of said latex in said confined space is effected and introducing said steam into the gas space above said latex but directed along the surface of the confined space.
