  • Patent number: 5839719
Abstract: A pneumatic strut for use as an opening power assist mechanism for a motor vehicle tailgate has a piston rod extending from a piston contained within a cylinder. The piston separates the cylinder into two work chambers, each containing a gas charge under pressure. A bypass opening is active to connect the work chambers during the initial opening displacement of the tailgate to automatically open the tailgate through a first opening angle range. A second valve can be externally actuated to connect the two work chambers to further selectively open the tailgate into a second opening angle range. To close the tailgate, a third, directionally dependent valve can automatically connect the two work chambers during the closing displacement of the tailgate.

  • Patent number: 5377942
Abstract: According to an illustrative example of the invention, a chair column comprises a base tube with a support plate. A gas spring is accommodated within the base tube. The piston rod of the gas spring is supported on the base tube by a ball bearing. The cylinder of the gas spring is guided at the upper end of the base tube by a guiding sleeve. The guiding sleeve is telescopical with respect to the base tube in response to outward and inward movement of the cylinder with respect to the base tube such that a full satisfactory guiding function is maintained between the cylinder and the base tube, even when the cylinder is in its uppermost position.

  • Patent number: 5131615
Abstract: A chair column comprises a stand tube. A support bush is inserted into the upper end portion of the stand tube. A gas spring cylinder extends axially through the receiver bush. The piston rod is directed downward and is connected with a bottom of the stand tube. The gas spring cylinder is guided through two axially spaced bearing bushes. The bearing bushes are radially supported by the receiver bush through a radially prestressed transmission ring or a plurality of circumferentially distributed buffers. The radial prestress is transmitted to the contact face between the bearing bushes and the gas spring cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5120011
Abstract: According to an illustrative example, a chair column comprises a stand tube. A gas spring is inserted in the stand tube with the piston rod thereof directed downwardly toward an abutment wall of the stand tube. The lower end of the piston rod is connected to the abutment wall and is rotatably supported on the abutment wall by a ball bearing. The ball bearing comprises two bearing discs and a plurality of balls therebetween. The bearing discs and the balls are pre-assembled by a cage. The bearing can be pre-assembled before it is combined with the lower end of the piston rod and is mounted thereafter on the lower end of the piston rod. The cage remains within the chair column when the gas spring is inserted subsequently into the stand tube together with the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5012996
Abstract: According to an illustrative example of the invention a gas spring has adjacent one end thereof an axially extending control pin. This control pin is prestressed towards an outer position and can be pushed inwards for opening a valve, which valve is provided in the passage between two working chambers established by a piston, said piston being fixed to a piston rod. When the pin is in its outward position, the gas spring is locked in the respective axial length. When the control pin is moved inwards, the axial length of the gas spring can be varied. The gas spring is intended for combination with a chair or table column. In combining the gas spring with a chair, the upper end of the gas spring cylinder is fixed to the lower side of the seat plate. The lower side of the seat plate is provided with a manipulating level. The manipulating lever engages the outer end of the control pin through a telescopic arrangement of control members or adapter elements.

  • Patent number: 4973097
Abstract: A gas spring is provided in an illustrational example between a framework and a trunk cover of a motor vehicle for compensating for the weight of the trunk cover during movement of said trunk cover. The gas spring is hinged to the framework and to the trunk cover. For eliminating the spring force action on the hinge between the trunk cover and the gas spring in the closed position of the trunk cover, the part of the gas spring hinged to the trunk cover is supported on the framework, when the trunk cover is in its closed position. Alternately, the gas spring is locked when the trunk cover is in its closed position.

  • Patent number: 4940202
Abstract: For a steplessly adjustable vertical movement device for chairs, tables or the like articles, which comprises a blockable gas spring which is arranged in a telescopic unit consisting of a telescopic tube and a guide tube and is connected by means of self-locking taper connections on the one hand with the chair seat or a similar article of adjustable height and on the other hand with a foot part, a simple replacement of the gas spring is to be provided, while security against unintended unscrewing of the gas spring is guaranteed. The gas spring should here be as simple as possible in construction, permit easy assembly and dismantlement and be arranged as freely as possible from bending stresses in the telescopic unit.

  • Patent number: 4830432
Abstract: A positioning device is used for the positioning of a chair seat as to its inclination, or for positioning a back-rest member of a chair. The positioning device is constructed such as usual hydropneumatic springs which can be locked by closing a passage connected to working chambers on both sides of a piston. The working chambers are filled with an operating liquid. In order to adapt the biasing force of such a positioning device, one of the working chambers is conneced with a force-measuring device, which force measuring device is provided within the force transmission path of the respective chair column. The force measuring device comprises a measuring space filled with operating liquid, and this operating liquid is in liquid connection with one of the working chambers.

  • Patent number: 4785921
Abstract: In a hydraulic positioning device a piston divides the cavity within a cylinder into two working chambers. The piston is connected with a piston rod passing through one end of the device and with a volume compensating rod through the other end of the device. The piston rod is provided with a passage which can be opened and closed by a valve so as to allow optional adjustment and blocking of the piston rod. The hydraulic liquid within the working chambers is subjected to volume variation in response to varying temperatures. With the aim of compensating such volume variations a partition at one end of the cylinder is supported by an abutment of the cylinder through an axially deformable compensating body having preferably a deformation force--deformation path characteristic which is responsive to temperature.

  • Patent number: 4756496
Abstract: A continuously adjustable levelling column for chairs comprises a guide tube having a lower end and an upper end. A telescopic tube is guided within the guide tube and has a tapered upper end portion extending beyond the upper end of the guide tube. A gas spring is accommodated within the telescopic tube. This gas spring is axially fixed within the telescopic tube. The upper end of a container of the gas spring abuts through a distance piece a support face at the upper end of the tapered portion of the telescopic tube. A piston rod passing through the lower end of the gas spring is axially fixed with respect to the lower end of the guide tube. A locking control pin extends through the upper end of the gas spring and is engageable through a transmission pin by a control handle.

  • Patent number: 4709790
Abstract: In a steplessly adjustable hydropneumatic device the spring chamber of which is arranged at the piston rod exit end and which works with a liquid locking, a very simple hydraulic locking is obtained even for high traction stressing upon the piston rod in that both an annular separator piston and the partition are arranged in the inner chamber of the container, which is penetrated by the piston rod. For the hydraulic traction locking in the case of traction forces exerted suddenly upon the piston rod a valve device is provided which cooperates with the piston rod.
