  • Patent number: 5473943
Abstract: The invention is directed to a u/s test device for nondestructive testing of a workpiece moving relative thereto by the pulse echo method, having a fluid coupling between the ultrasonic oscillator and the surface of the work material. At least two test heads are provided whose sound beam axes intersect at a point in the region of the workpiece and a travel path in the form of a chamber is provided for guiding the fluid medium. To reduce susceptibility to interference and to achieve high test performance, a separately guided travel path extending along a determined length of the chamber and forming a duct (12-20) is associated with each test head (1-9), the axes of the travel path being aligned with the respective sound beam axis.

  • Patent number: 5228343
Abstract: An ultrasound testing device for the non-destructive testing of a workpiece wherein at least three testing heads are disposed on a testing head carrier, and the testing heads emit sound waves which converge at one or more intersections in an area of the workpiece so as to detect defects and determine the wall thickness. Operationally, the number of intersections is one less than the number of testing heads, and the separation between the sound waves is chosen so as to avoid the disturbances associated with utilization of oppositely situated testing heads. In addition, the device uses a flow medium to couple the testing heads to the surface of the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4492118
Abstract: Plate stock of uneven and variable thickness is tested for defects by means of ultrasonics whereby the zone adjacent the front surface and up to a depth of the minimum plate thickness is detected conventionally, but under utilization of a novel method the zone of variable thickness adjacent the rear wall is tested by detecting any echo in a gating period (15) that is returned from that zone or from the rear wall, and such an echo is used to set up a supplemental gating period during which either none or the rear wall echo will occur and in the latter case the setting up of the supplemental gating period is interpreted as having resulted from the presence of a defect (for example, echo 12) so that the occurrence of the rear wall echo 9 within the supplemental gating period is registered as an indication of a defect.

  • Patent number: 4366712
Abstract: Sheet or plate stock is used as to defects by a row of ultrasonic transmitting transducers on one side and receiving transducers on the other. The transmitting transducers receive frequency-modulated signals via individual buffers, and the receiving transducers feed individual, digital amplitude envelope minima to detection circuits whose outputs are fed to a computer which also feeds operating parameters to the source for the modulated signals. Different types (autonomy) of the receiver channels are described as well as diagnostic and setup procedures.
