  • Patent number: 5355796
Abstract: An anilox offset printing unit includes a short inking device mounted between side walls with a screen roller which can be doctored and immersed in an ink reservoir, an inking roller, and a plate cylinder for inking a rubber blanket cylinder, and a damping device acting on the plate cylinder. An adjusting device having two degrees of freedom serves to adjust the distance between the axes of the inking roller and the screen roller and/or the distance between the axes of the inking roller and the plate cylinder, wherein the adjustment is carried out by the adjusting device in accordance with a measurement value determined by a measuring element which interacts with the adjusting device.

  • Patent number: 5351615
Abstract: An offset blanket for a grooveless blanket cylinder for applying a printed image onto web material or sheet material is composed of a carrier plate which has been cut to size and a rubber layer placed on the carrier plate. The beginning and the end of the carrier plate of the rubber layer are connected to each other so that the outer circumferential surface of the blanket is continuous and without gaps. The blanket surrounds the blanket cylinder in the operating position in the form of a sleeve in a frictionally engaging manner but releasably. A register device is provided on at least one end face of the blanket for securely positioning the blanket on the blanket cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5258925
Abstract: A method for detecting diffuse reflections of full-tone and half-tone fields in order to prepare diagnoses on problem factors and/or changes in process parameters, such as blurring, dampness, machine temperature. During printing, the diffuse reflections of the full-tone and half-tone fields are detected with scanners. This is done in such a way that for at least two printed copies, in at least two fields of each copy, the diffuse reflections of full-tone and half-tone areas, or of at least two half-tone fields of different area coverages are compared, and based on the results of this comparison, diagnoses and/or control recommendations are made.

  • Patent number: 5255602
Abstract: An apparatus for threading webs in rotary printing machines. A threading belt (13) in the form of a hook band of a "VELCRO" closure is guided on the threading path, and the leading edge of the web has a loop band (35) which is engaged in the threading belt.

  • Patent number: 5215014
Abstract: To position two relatively rotatable elements, for example folding jaw control elements of a folding jaw cylinder of a rotary printing machine, with respect to each other, and re-position the elements, a positioning drive (7), for example a motor coupled to a gear, which is coupled for rotary transmission to an axially movable shaft or rod element (10, 10'), movable, for example, under fluid, preferably pneumatic pressure. When projected, the coupling element is engageable with a positioning gear (12) on one of the elements (22) and, upon rotation of the element by the positioning drive, can effect re-adjustment of the angular position of the other element, upon engagement with a positioning gear (11) coupled thereto. The arrangement permits remote positioning and indication of relative position by a feedback transducer (13, 113), such as a potentiometer, which can provide position signals suitable for a display (B).

  • Patent number: 5152472
Abstract: To permit essentially automatic control of roll changing to change between an old roll and a replacement roll of printing machine paper, adhesive is applied to the old roll, at predetermined locations, as the old roll runs off, and the now sticky surface is engaged against the beginning portion from the new roll, the old roll then being severed within the range of the still sticky portion to ensure complete adhesion of substrate from the old roll on the substrate of the new roll. Excess adhesive which is not covered by substrate from a new roll is deactivated by a deactivating element (7) positioned in advance of any deflection roller to prevent accumulation of adhesive on any elements of the roll changer of the printing machine.

  • Patent number: 5117753
Abstract: To permit versatile operation of a multi-station printing machine installation or system having a first printing machine subsystem for printing on a first substrate web which includes a plurality of printing stations (2-5) and accessory apparatus, such as dryers, coolers, folders and the like, and a second printing machine subsystem (11) likewise having a plurality of printing stations (12-15), dryers, coolers and folders, and wherein the first subsystem, additionally, includes auxiliary apparatus such as a lacquering unit (6), an adhesive application unit (21), and further paper handling units (22, 23, 24) which may be useful for certain printing jobs carried out by the further printing machine subsystem (11) but are not always used for printing jobs in the first subsystem (1), substrate web guide means (47-50, 53, 54) are provided in each one of the subsystems to guide the web from, for example, the further subsystem (11) to the auxiliary apparatus (6; 21-24) of the first subsystem and then, if desired, bac

  • Patent number: 4821640
Abstract: To permit both circumferential as well as axial register adjustment of three printing couples (1, 2, 3), in which the respective cylinders of the printing couples are interconnected by spiral gears, two of the blanket cylinders (4, 8) are axially shiftable. The changes in circumferential register, upon changing of lateral register--due to the spiral gears--are compensated by position motor controllers (34, 44) which may include a microprocessor (50), automatically. Lateral register is set in a predetermined sequence by the respective cylinders, in accordance with the coupling of one of the plate cylinders (e.g. 5) with a printing machine main drive pinion (68).

  • Patent number: 4590856
Abstract: To prevent printing of imperfect copy, by a printing machine having a lifter-type inker, which is caused by cyclically recurring rotary oscillations or vibrations, the braking torque introduced upon contact of a lifter roller (3) with the first milling and distribution roller (4) of the inker is prevented from propagating through the gearing drive of the respective inker rollers. To prevent such propagation, the first milling and distributing roller (4) is yieldingly driven at machine speed, for example by frictional drive, transmitted through an elastic surface (6) of a "soft" roller in frictional drive engagement with the first milling and distributing roller (4) as well as with a positively driven subsequent milling and distributing roller (7), or a circumferentially resilient yielding coupling (13) is interposed between the drive shaft element (8) for the first milling and distibuting roller and a positive gear drive (10, 11, 12).

  • Patent number: 4290362
Abstract: Ink is picked up by an ink roller which has a surface characterized as consisting of a foamed plastic with pores open at the outer circumference but not interconnected. The ink roller dips into ink within an ink trough. The ink being applied to the ink roller is controlled by stripping elements formed as rollers which are pressed with controllable force against the surface of the ink pick-up roller; the force can be controlled, for example, by pneumatic or hydraulic fluid means, such as pressure piston-cylinder arrangements, blow-up pillows, or fluid pressure being applied against the roller mechanism directly; or by mechanical means, such as by a spring suspension in which the attachment points of the springs are selectively positionable. Preferably, the stripping rollers are about 1/15 or less of the diameter of the ink pick-up roller, and driven at a circumferential speed which is slow with respect to that of the ink pick-up roller.
